I wish they were more numerous and had a more pleasant midrange. Useable and can sound good though

This was a gift to my grandson who is in a high school jazz band and he was very happy to receive it.

these are great as shakers and louder than you'd expect. i use them to compliment drumset playing, sometimes i'll hold it in my right hand along with a drumstick to add shaker sounds to a hihat. sometimes i like to sit it ontop of snare or tom heads for an effect, and my favorite is to sit it on top of the hi hats(yes, literally on top of the cymbal, touching the bronze), it adds some trashiness and complexity to the sound. if i have a heavier pair of hats that i want to "pretend" are lighter and jazzier, this on top makes the world of difference. works good for adding a crunch for hiphop types of sounds too. they do chip and break a little when played as i just described, laying on top of my top hihat, but i've been using these regularly like that for months now and it's not made any significant difference.
