The Greatest Hits, So Far

This is one of those greatest hits albums that truly does deliver the greatest hits of a band, in this case, John Lydon's Public Image Ltd., a band that was once central to the nascent postpunk alternative rock world in the late 70s through 80s, but which is now almost an anachronism.Growing up in that era, being a big Sex Pistols fan, I eagerly dug PiL back in the day, even if I've mostly moved on now that I'm old(er). That said, this collection features the songs that can help people understand what the fuss was about with PiL back in the day. They're that killer blend of dark, techno, danceable, and incendiary. Postpunk pop (although Lydon would likely hate that labeling, the way he hates pretty much everything), but in the best way -- catchy, but with a killer edge to each tune.The music world has changed (some would say devolved) to the point where a band like PiL these days wouldn't be able to catch on widely (the XX are an example of this, in my view), certainly not the way PiL did.As a sampler of a once-great band passed up by time and space, this one captures the PiL magic that tracked so well in that postpunk era. I won't pick out particular tunes, because they're all so good.

This is for you!In all seriousness, pretty much all the standards are on here, meaning anything you'd normally hear in a club (minus the club mixes) or on the radio, and a few more thrown in that are, in my opinion, just as good.A great relaase of PiL's work over the years. A really good Greatest Hits for your collection.

If you are a P.I.L. fan, this is a great CD to have.

John Lydon is a musical genius. Just when I tired of music, I listened to this album and it made me feel alive again. Lydon knows how to make the listener feel what he is trying to convey. So many artists have been influenced by PiL in modern music, but Lydon and hi crews rarely get credit.

This CD is a nice throw back to the post-punk era. If you like John Lydon, the Sex Pistols, or that old hit song from Time Zone, you could get a few kicks with this oldie...

Looking back on Lydon's post punk band, one goes from near avant-garde to alt pop. There's more to PIL than you get here but you get a fairly good overview. Rise and Seattle are favorites of mine. But many tracks drone on forever. Were they a dance band? I gave up on the last 4 songs.
