Product Description Angus MacGyver is a secret agent who refuses to carry a gun with him, but fortunately never needs one. Drawing on a vast practical knowledge of science, MacGyver is able to make use of anything around him to create solutions to any problem he faces. Underestimating MacGyver is a major mistake made by his enemies and always results in the destruction of their plans desertcart.com Like James Bond--but without the high-tech gadgets--Angus MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) is one of those rare beings who can avert any crisis without mussing a hair. (The rest of us should be so lucky.) In the pilot alone, the secret agent dismantles a missile using a paper clip and fashions a rocket thruster out of a pistol. Is there anything MacGyver can't do? As the first season of ABC's long-running adventure series proves, the answer is a resounding no. MacGyver's secret: the everyday items he "finds along the way," like matches or gum wrappers, and the ingenuity to put them to a myriad of uses (a background in physics and chemistry doesn't hurt). Unlike Alias' Sidney Bristow, he isn't a multi-linguist, a martial artist, or a master of disguises. Wits are MacGyver's weapon of choice. Produced by Henry Winkler (Arrested Development), The Complete First Season includes all 22 episodes from 1985-1986 (alas, there are no extras). MacGyver is joined by Phoenix Foundation director of operations Pete Thornton (Dana Elcar), who is introduced in "Nightmares." Also, his grandfather, Harry Jackson (John Anderson), makes his first appearance in "Target MacGyver," while friend Penny Parker (Teri Hatcher of Desperate Housewives) makes hers in "Every Time She Smiles" (they will appear more frequently in future seasons). Other notable guest stars include Joan Chen (The Last Emperor) in "The Golden Triangle," Nana Visitor (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) in "Hellfire," and John De Lancie (Star Trek: The Next Generation) in "The Escape."MacGyver ran for seven seasons and was followed by two made-for-TV movies in 1994, Lost Treasure of Atlantis and Trail to Doomsday. In 1997, after a short-lived series for UPN (1995's Legend), Anderson landed the lead in an even longer-running series, Stargate SG-1, based on the sci-fi extravaganza with Kurt Russell. --Kathleen C. Fennessy Review: still good - use to watch this show when I was alot younger. Still is really good. Review: MacGyver- the best television series ever! - MacGyver on DVD!!! (Officially!) This is awesome! MacGyver is my favorite show of all time. I grew up watching this show from beginning to end and it is so great to see it finally being given a full season by season release on DVD. For anyone who by some unfortunate chance has never gotten to see this show, definitely pick this set up. (Though I wish desertcart would spell the name right. The "G" is capitalized!) Here's a few reasons why I like this show so much. Well, okay, the first thing that drew me to the show was the great action and last minute escapes with MacGyverisms. Amazing what you can do with a Swiss Army Knife, duct tape, and your wits! :-) I really liked the fact that he was against guns, smoking, drugs, and drinking. All in all, MacGyver is a great show that provides plenty of action and entertainment, actual useful knowledge, and a positive role model who portrays good morals. He also was one of the most caring heroes on TV who took time to help others just because they needed help. He really had genuine compassion and kindness towards others. I also like the way that he shook his hand after punching someone. It really showed a human side to him, that it's okay to say "ow" when you hurt. He was definitely a cool hero and those are all the reasons why I still love watching MacGyver today.

FINALLY, my prayers have been answered!!!
Now I know why he never said his first name.. (did he ever say on the show?) MAC GYVER IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE TV SHOW. The first couple seasons of Mac are absolutely the best (Mac the international problem solver)..loved all the extra 5 minute preview stories. Then Paramount lost their edge in the last half (Mac the urban avenger). This package is certainly worth every penny for commercial free, uninterupted Mac although I agree with most that they could have put in more work to talk to the frequently shown cast and explain where the idea for the show started. This show deserved some frills to be added but a true fan like me is just glad after 20 years to have something better than my worn out tapes. After the first show I was hooked, I tried back in 1985 to record each show but tape gets old, mess ups on pausing/recording, or tapes accidentally get ruined. For years I have wished for a set like this to come out and as I do every so often when I watch a show on TVland or WGN I hoped something like this would be made and just this past weekend I saw the commercial and couldn't order the set fast enough. For a kid of only 14-15 in 1985 to see someone think on his toes like Mac and save the day made him my hero and I still think of him that way. A TRULY INSPIRATIONAL GOOD GUY!! RDA is a class act and SG1 shows he wasn't just a flash in the pan. He is my generation's James Bond before we really knew of James Bond. I hope this package does well to illustrate just how popular the show was and is. The shows in this package to me are the best of the best. Extras would be the only thing they could have added to make the set complete. Paramount, HINT..HINT for Season 2!!!

Season 1: Essential, But not the MacGyver I Remember
I had a lot of fun viewing the first season of this legendary TV show! For some reason, there's a bunch of us 30-year-olds out there who have been seeking-out the TV shows of our youth (and MacGyver ranks right up there, alongside shows like The A-Team). Fortunately for us, the 21st century comes equipped with DVD box sets! That being said, I'm forced to agree with some previous reviewers: this box set falls short in comparison to all the other DVD box sets I've seen. There are no extras whatsoever, and that's unfortunate. It would have been nice to hear Richard Dean Anderson's comments, or have held interviews with the guest stars (a very young (and cute) Teri Hatcher appears as Penny Parker in "Every Time She Smiles" and Trek fans will recognize Q (John de Lancie), who appears in "The Escape"). Speaking of Star Trek, it's funny that Paramount spared no expense with the Star Trek: TNG box sets (granted, that show has a very demanding fan-base), but MacGyver's set is a complete 180 degrees...a bare-bones box set that doesn't do the show's reputation justice (it seems Paramount wants us to pay over $100 per-season before they add bonus material). Nevertheless, Season 1 is worth it. Inconsistent acting, campy scripts and bad stock footage of foreign locales aside, it still brought back good memories. However, I'm really anticipating future box sets of MacGyver (I saw an episode on TV Land not too long ago (an episode from a later season) and it was an all-around better production). Next time though, let's see if Paramount can round up some of the gang for a "special features" section!
