Absolutely amazing, and I will say the same for all of the Joe Hisaishi's OSTs that I have bought. I listen to all of them very often, even over the music in my video-games.

## Soundtrack Review: Spirited Away (千と千尋の神隠し) Joe Hisaishi's score for Hayao Miyazaki’s 2001 masterpiece, ***Spirited Away***, is widely regarded as one of the most iconic and emotionally complete soundtracks in the history of animation. Performed by the New Japan Philharmonic, the music acts as the essential bridge between the mundane world and the terrifying, breathtaking beauty of the Spirit Realm, perfectly embodying the film's themes of growth, courage, and memory. ### **The Music: Lyrical Beauty and Thematic Unity** The soundtrack is defined by its strong thematic unity, centered around several powerful leitmotifs that track Chihiro's journey and transformation into Sen. * **"One Summer's Day" (あの夏へ - *Ano Natsu e*):** This is the album's most famous piece and arguably Hisaishi's signature piano composition. It is a wistful, deceptively simple melody that is instantly recognizable. The track is built on lyrical piano chords that convey a profound sense of yearning, melancholy, and nostalgia, perfectly capturing the bittersweet feeling of a memory just out of reach. It serves as Chihiro's main theme, representing her past and her eventual return. * **A World of Wonder and Terror:** The score expertly shifts between light and darkness. Tracks like **"A Road to Somewhere"** and **"Procession of Gods"** use unique, sometimes dissonant, orchestration and a blend of traditional orchestral instruments with peculiar, almost Eastern-sounding scales and percussive effects to establish the otherworldly nature of the Bathhouse. The theme for Yubaba, for instance, uses a majestic, almost frightening brass and choir arrangement, lending her character immense weight and power. * **Emotional Climax:** Two tracks stand out for their emotional depth: * **"The Sixth Station" (6番目の駅 - *Rokubanme no Eki*):** This piece accompanies the serene, silent train ride across the flooded plains. It is a sublime combination of slow, gentle strings and a repeating, mesmerizing piano line that evokes a feeling of quiet resignation and boundless distance. It is pure, cinematic poetry. * **"Reprise" (ふたたび - *Futatabi*):** This is the majestic, full orchestral version of "One Summer's Day," played when Chihiro remembers Haku's name. It is a thunderous, emotional culmination of her entire journey, where the melody finally blooms into an expression of triumphant love and courage. ### **The Final Touch** The soundtrack concludes with the beautiful theme song, **"Always With Me" (いつも何度でも - *Itsumo Nando Demo*)**, sung by Yumi Kimura and accompanied by the haunting sound of the lyre. It provides a peaceful, reflective closure that reinforces the film's message that the most important lessons and connections remain with us, even after we leave the magical world behind. ### **Verdict** ***Spirited Away*** is not merely background music; it is the emotional language of the film. Hisaishi’s ability to weave unforgettable melodies—especially his piano work—with a rich, eclectic orchestral tapestry makes this score an essential listening experience, whether you are re-experiencing the film's magic or simply appreciating it as a standalone classical work. It is, quite simply, a masterpiece of modern film scoring.
