Great Book
This book takes you through the ins and outs of African drumming. It gives you the folkloric drum group rhythms, then adapts them to drum set.

This is an excellent source of information on not just four distinctive Ghanaian rhythms but the history of music in general and drumming in particular. This book actually helped me to understand the link between African-American jazz music and Ghanaian social dance music. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is serious about drumming.

Great find!
It's a very valuable book. Not easy if you're a beginner. You must have good independence, or be willing to spend time with the lessons. I just started it and I can see it will be part of my practice routine for a long time to come. There's plenty to learn and use from this book.

Required for rhythm mastery
As a bassist I found this book really helped to keep me progressing with my skills. It's pretty great at a jam, playing the same old blues tunes, when I can turn some heads with alternate syncopation while bs king a soloist.

Wrong title for the book
The book should have been called Ghana rhythms for Drum-kit instead. It is a mere collection and adaptation to few main rhythms of the Ghana traditional drumming, long from any other West-African cultures like Guinean one, Senegalese one, etc...Well done over all, really good examples on the cd. Not for beginners at all.As I do know how vast the music is in West-Africa I would have thought this product would give many more examples.

This is a great breakdown of African rhythms taken from Ghanaian traditional percussion ensembles and adapted to drumset. Lots of material here to challenge your independence and some great grooves. Hartigan has a deep understanding and respect for the tradition and its contributory relationship to music from the Caribbean, Cuba, Brazil, Puerto Rico, New Orleans etc. Very impressive work!

Libro imprescindible
Un libro imprescindible para todos aquellos interesados en los ritmos de África y en la batería. Una fuente de riqueza incalculable. Ejemplos bien claros con el DVD. Un libro de cabecera.
