Yes it can hold three normal size rings.

Can it be used as a one tier? Is the dividing glass removable?

No it’s not removable but I’m sure you can find one that’s only one tier on Amazon

How big is the door (hxw)?

The door opening is the size of one of the triangles. This item is more to look at, then to use. I was using it to store marbles, for a interchangeable marble ring/jewelry. Because I was going into it, every single day, to choose a daily marble color to put into the ring… The soldering broke, damn near immediately!!! I do not recommend this item

Would this hold sand without it leaking out (within the bottom part, of course)?

The sand would leak at the brass joints.
