Yes it does. You separate the tablet from the keyboard and reassemble magnetically similarly in portrait mode. Easy to do. I use it this way for those marginal applications like iPhone apps that don't rotate to landscape mode. Also I use it for reading books in portrait mode.

Q: will it fit the new iPad 9.7" 2017?

It cannot fit the new iPad 2017 model as it is thicker and its camera is different from the iPad pro and iPad air2 series. Suggest you wait for an exclusive release specifically for the new iPad
