Era-1 Planar Magnetic Headphones

These headphones are supplied with two sets of earpads. They come fitted with velour-faced ones, and I found the sound with them a little veiled, and deep bass was too heavy. After a few days, I fitted the alternative tapered and perforated leather ones, and was surprised by how much difference they made. The sound became open and natural, with a well-extended and effortless bass, clean midrange and sweet treble. I am used to listening on Quad ESL-63 electrostatic loudspeakers, and the Era-1 headphones seem to mimic them remarkably well. Indeed, I have never heard my music more clearly. I usually listen to so-called 'classical' music, and find the headphones well suited to the whole range, from chamber works, though full orchestral and organ. Whilst I strongly prefer the alternative earpads, I can quite see that someone more interested in pop music or rock may prefer the velour earpads. Either way, I would strongly recommend these headphones to any serious listener.

Beautifully engineered headphones. Great sound but had to return them as they we just too big for my average size head.

I've had two pairs of these this year and both of them broke at the yoke. The first one broke when I dropped it from 3 inches onto the carpet and the other broke when I picked it up via the headband. Unfortunately, I got rid of the packaging from the first one. The second one I could send back to Quad for repair/replacement only to have that thin bit of plastic break in a couple of month's time. The plastic in the yoke isn't as thick as it looks. It's about 6 mm thick. It's annoying because they're the first headphones I've heard that make instruments sound like instruments i.e solid bodied as well as reproducing rhythms and micro dynamics within a song/tune. They've got real slam, and speed as well. It says something about them when I say I suppose I'll have to go back to my Sennheiser HD 800s

The sound is superb...crisp with a full bass, instruments nicely spaced across the stage. Hearing details previously hidden, making the whole experience musically very enjoyable. Comfortable to wear...but definitely not travel size, so keep them at home.

They sound beautiful, better than Denon AH-D9200 (to my ears) and the HiFiMan Ananda I tried. Sadly the design only works if you have a large head. I got so frustrated with the fit I had to return them. Even at the smallest setting they fall off. Such a shame.

Listening to a well recorded track now through a lightning/3.5mm adapter to my iPhone11 via the Tidal app. Stunning, stunning sound - great soundscape, stereo separation. Well made and not at all heavy on the head...no buyer's remorse here! Now to get the Quad valve headphone amp and upgrade the cables to solid silver. Very happy.

As a long time owner of various Quad equipment over decades, including the original ESL electrostatics, I was very pleased to see their first foray in headphones. Now listening to most music via hi-res streaming, I use the Meridian Prime Headphone Amplifier with MQA and the matching external power supply. Headphones I've used include higher end AKG, Sennheiser, Oppo, B&W, Hi-FiMan, Audio Technica. To my ears , none is overall as impressive - tonally balanced, clear, precise imaging etc. - as the Quad ERA-1 . Great value for a high-end set.

These headphones are well made and have a balanced sound comparable with the electrostatic speakers for which Quad are famous. They represent good value for a plano magnetic design

...wie Damir Franc in seiner Video-Rezension auf youTube schon festgestellt hat aber trotzdem werde ich den Quad era-1 zurückgeben! Der Kopfhörer entspricht klanglich exakt dem, was ich mir vorgestellt und gesucht habe. Klare Höhen, nicht spitz sondern fein auflösend und authentisch, Mitten ganz leicht zurückhaltend aber ebenso authentisch mit hoher Sprachverständlichkeit und traumhaften Klangfarben und der Bass... was soll ich sagen... Grollend, tief, konturiert, mit Punch mal knackig-hart, mal soft-warm. Wunderbares Fundament für jede Art von Musik, dabei nicht dominant oder gar überlagernd. Wenn die Quelle Bass liefert, kommt er auch entsprechend, wenn nicht, dann dichtet der Quad auch nichts hinzu. Dazu eine Raumabbildung, die in Tiefe und Breite genau meinen Wünschen entspricht. Nicht zu weit aber auch nicht zu "intim". Stimmen werden sehr gut platziert, je nach Aufnahme und Musikmaterial mal weiter hinten, mal ganz vorne, mal auf dem Schoß. Aber am wichtigsten, alles spielt wunderbar zusammen, harmonisch und entspannt, Musikhören macht einfach nur Spaß, ich hab in der kurzen Zeit den Akku meines hip-dac-2 mehrfach "leer gehört" und hätte trotzdem noch stundenlang weitermachen können. Trotzdem werde ich ihn zurückgeben (müssen) weil er mir leider nicht passt. Mein Kopf ist zu klein, die Verstellmöglichkeiten "nach unten" sind leider limitiert. Er ist nicht so krass "zu groß" wie die Hifiman-Hörer, die ich mir nach Anprobe in einem Studio gar nicht erst angehört habe aber trotzdem für mich schlussendlich doch nicht nicht akzeptabel. Bei der kleinsten Einstellung "hängt" der Quad regelrecht auf meinem Kopf, das beginnt dann trotz guter Polsterung sehr schnell zu drücken. Die Ohrmuscheln sind dadurch auch zu tief, sodass der untere Rand auf den Kieferknochen aufliegt und damit durch den fehlenden Anpressdruck auch nicht wirklich "trägt" und abschließt. Fühlt sich einfach nicht gut an, der Austausch gegen die anderen, beiliegenden (Velour-) Ohrpolster hilft an der Stelle leider auch nicht weiter, der Tragekomfort bessert sich dadurch nicht (sind noch schmäler) und klanglich auch eher nachteilig. Ich war wg. der klanglichen Qualitäten fast bereit, diesen Kompromiss trotzdem einzugehen, habe mich dann aber doch dagegen entschieden, weil es langfristig sicher keine Dauerlösung wäre. Deshalb leider, leider das Fazit, klanglich absolut traumhaft, sehr preiswürdig aber für meinen Kopf einfach nicht gemacht.

La Quad Era-1 è un esempio di quanto sia strano il settore cuffie Hi-End. Stiamo parlando di una delle migliori cuffie al mondo indipendentemente dal prezzo e venduta ad un prezzo più che ridicolo e totalmente ignorata dal mondo cuffiofilo Hi-End. Io sono un audiofilo e cuffiofilo di lunga data e ho un impianto Hi-End di tutto rispetto. Iniziamo dalla sorgente costituita da Eversolo DMP-A6 con modulo alimentazione upgradato con modulo lineare LHY Audio LPS-A6, collegato via USB al reclocker/isolatore galvanico LHY Audio UIP a sua volta collegato al Cen Grand DSDAC 1.0 Deluxe e infine collegato in bilanciato all'ampli cuffie Flux Lab Mentor a cui collego la mia Quad Era-1 via XLR 4 pin con cavo in argento puro after market. Prima di questa ho posseduto tante cuffie, alcune cosiddette Totl come l'Hifiman H-1000 V2, poi la SE, La Focal Utopia, La ZMF Veritè, La Pioneer SE-Master 1, altre di fascia Media come l'Hifiman Ananda, la Edition X2, la Sundara, La Verum 1 altre di fascia alta come l'Hifiman HE6-SE V2, la ZMF Aeolus ecc... Quindi posso dire la mia in fatto di cuffie. Ebbene secondo la mia opinione la Quad le batte tutte nel senso che è la più equilibrata, completa, quella con più impatto su bassi e medio bassi e con più corpo. Insomma un mostro di cuffia con un ampio, profondo e olografico palcoscenico con la presentazione strumentale più naturale che abbia mai sentito. Inoltre risponde in modo eccellente all'EQ arrivando a vette stratosferiche. Infine è facile da pilotare e scala in modo impressionante con la qualità di sorgente e ampli. Non posso che consigliarla vivamente. Cuffia endgame!

Der Quad ist ein hervorragend klingender Kopfhörer. Für mich vereint er ohne Kompromisse, was jeweils sehr gute offene oder geschlossene Kopfhörer in ihrer Klasse ausmacht. Vor dem Kauf habe ich unter anderem Modelle von Audio Technica, AKG, Grado, Sennheiser und Beyerdynamic bis zu einem Kaufpreis von knapp unter € 2.000 in die engere Auswahl einbezogen. Auch diese Hersteller verstehen ihr Handwerk. Mein Wunsch war es, möglichst einen Kopfhörer zu finden, der die Räumlichkeit und Offenheit sehr guter offener Kopfhörer bietet und trotzdem auch im Bass tief hinabreicht. Der Quad kann genau das. Er klingt detailliert, räumlich, offen und geht tief hinab in den Basskeller. Dabei ist er eher neutral abgestimmt (es wird also nichts hinzugedichtet). Instrumente, Frauen- oder Männerstimmen, Kammermusik oder Livekonzerte, alles passt. Das der Kopfhörer hier eher in vergleichsweise geringen Stückzahlen verkauft wird, liegt sicher nicht an seinen Qualitäten sondern möglicherweise daran, dass die englische Traditionsmarke Quad vielen nicht bekannt sein dürfte. Meiner Meinung nach nimmt es der Quad klanglich auch mit Kopfhören im vierstelligen Kaufpreisbereich auf.

Ich genieße diese Kopfhörer nun seit 2,5 Jahren. Für mich ist die Klangqualität perfekt. Es ist immer wieder aufs neue eine Freude Musik über meinen USB DAC damit zu hören. Ich hatte schon viele Kopfhörer (allerdings alle <500 EUR), aber keiner kommt an diesen heran. Auch der Tragekomfort ist für mich absolut angenehm. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Rezessionen, denke ich dass der Umfang für die meisten Ohren passen sollte (Innendurchmesser ca. 7,1 x 4,5 cm gemessen). Da der Höreindruck doch durchaus subjektiv ist, möchte ich hierauf nicht weiter eingehen. Für mich ist er nahezu perfekt. Nach 2,5 Jahren war leider eine Hörmuschel ohne Funktion, keine Ahnung warum. Mail an die Firma IAD GmbH wurde sofort beantwortet und der Kopfhörer wurde innerhalb von 2 Wochen kostenfrei (!) repariert (Treiber ersetzt). Absolut vorbildlich. Ich kann diesen Kopfhörer nur empfehlen. Edit: Nach nun 4 Jahren löst sich leider das Kunstleder am Bügel in viele kleine Fetzen auf. Die Ummantelung ist hauchdünn. Ich musste alles ab rubbeln damit ich ihn, auch ohne anschließendem Gang in die Dusche, weiter benutzen kann. Wegen dieser schlechten Bauqualität nun nur noch 3 Sterne.
