The inner core is a jointed plastic 'snake'. It holds its shape well, but it does make a creaking sound when you reshape it. Personally I don't notice the core when its in use though- can't feel it through the memory foam unless you squeeze it.

Am also short but was in window seat. It stayed in the same shape and my head in the same place the entire trip across the USA.

I don't know what you would consider soft or firm. It is very comfortable. I sleep with mine wrapped around by neck every night for needed neck bone support. I forget it is there.
