Asterix #39: Asterix and The Griffin (39)

A Political Correctness Story
A story where the roles are reversed in a similar village; the men stay at home and the women are the warriors. And just so Asterix doesn't show everyone up, they took care of the magic potion. My only peeve was that the English version had the druid called Panoramix and not Getafix, which is the name I'm used to.

Clean satire and humor.
Timeless classics being continued in a seamless manner by new generation of writers.

Pc asterix, USA version, 1/2 size
Story tries to be very PC fake news edgy, but still holds an interesting story idea. Didn't realize it would be the USA version so it has panoramix rather than getafix as the druid. Book is also half sized, not the full album size. Still nice surprise that a new story came out.

Great Art, Poor Translation (wrong names!) and Wrong Size! Come on!
Griffin has some pretty stunning art, though the new artist still has not been able to convey surprise, anger, being stunned and being thick quite with the humour of old. However, this lovely art is spoiled by the smaller format of the publication. What happened to the regular sized book? This will not fit with your collection. Poor choice, publisher! Next, get a new translator who understands the series. Honestly, changing names? What happened to Getafix? Why rename the Roman camps? Etc, etc. Sorry, but this series is not going to pick up many new readers, so you need to satisfy your long term fans and that means sticking to the world we know. The story is not bad, but the translator just does not have the sense of humour of Bell & Hockridge, who added much. If you are an old time fan like me maybe head over to Amazon.co.uk and see if the British edition is any better. I will.

Asterix and the Griffin
I got this book for my husbands birthday. We have been reading and collecting the Asterix books for years. A good book.

why on earth would they make this one a different size?
TEN stars for the art...i first disovered asterix in about '81, i was spending the night at a friends house. the friend and his family were english, so he had a stack of comics i'd never seen. i was instantly in love with the gorgeous art, it was many years before i could find some to buy for myself!asterix comics are among some of the most gorgeously drawn comics of all time, my first favorite artist is walt kelly (pogo) and uderzo comes a close second.the new artist, didier conrad absolutely NAILS the look of what i consider to be the sweet spot in uderzo's career, it's common for artists to start off with decent ability then hit their stride years later, and then in their waning years have their art get a touch bland. didier is obviously a fan of the middle period of asterix comics, and he's perfect for the job. the writing on these new editions has been decent, i don't think this one is the strongest in terms of the story, but it's still an enjoyable readBUT. why make it a new size?! i own tons of european comics, they're all very close to being the same size and shape, and this one is perhaps 20 percent smaller, the gorgeous art should be presented as big as possible! if the new publisher wanted to make a splash with their new publication, they could have gone bigger and there'd be less unhappy customers! it would still be odd to have one a different size than the others but still...i expect it was a cost cutting thing, 20% less paper, less ink... adds up, resulting in more profit potential. bad move!

hardcover issue is smaller than previous issues
I had a not happy surprise when the book arrived. I bought the hardcover version and it is smaller than previous issues. Returned for refund.

The new, smaller format is horrible.
Good comic, by the new authors, that finally captures the spirit and style of the originals. However, the new, smaller format is awful. It's just too small to read comfortably.

Wasn't the best.
I was so excited to read this new adventure, however there was something about it that just click for me. I am sure some people will love it but as I said not for me.

Asterix & the Griffin
Transports me to the good old Asterix days, the illustrations and witty conversations between the Gauls, Romans and 'Barbarians' still have the old touch and all in all I'd recommend it. It's difficult to replicate the comics exactly the way they used to be, but it's a good effort and we die hard fans can look forward to more Gaulish adventures!
