Plug in, and walk away!
Note: If you read nothing else, you can get your user manual here: wd.com/docs (I read it in the fine print in the material that arrives with the drive)I've waited WAY too long to back up my Mac computers. I remember reformatting drives in the past, and it was no fun. I decided to pick up the 4TB version of this drive and give it a try. I knew to expect the first backup to take a while, so that was no problem. What I liked was that I was able to plug in, and the time machine immediately opened to start a back up. I just waited until it started, then walked away times... I am now using this as a time machine for two different mac computers. After backing up two computers, I've still got 3.65 of 4TB free. I thought about getting the 2TB, but am now glad that I did not. I did purchase the $9.99 warranty through Amazon, only because it includes data recovery (wasn't clear if the WD warranty would). I do expect this will stop working one day, but I think its the best of the devices I reviewed. I hope to never need to use the warranties, but I'm glad they are there.I'd get this you have even ONE Mac Device. I don't feel a need to backup my Android phone because I have google photos, and much of my other stuff is backed up on Google Drive. Finally, I stored it in an old external hard drive case. Its super tiny, so it can be neatly stashed on a bookcase. I'm sure you've heard its important to go gentle on your drive.Hope this works well for you!

WD drives have served me for YEARS and I've never felt better about buying their products again.
I used to buy Seagate products - until they totally hosed me with a faulty product that stopped working in 3 months and then refused to admit the poor quality of their products or help me recover my data - a total shame since it used to be my 'go to' choice in the past. No more. I even have an older iOmega drive that hasn't failed for over a decade, but not Seagate.I found that Western Digital was always good in the past and is even better now. They are my GO TO drive of choice for a couple of years now. The drives are sturdy, well-built, fashionable - and most importantly, reliable! I have three WD drives now - each of a different data capacity - one for Mac and two for other platforms. They don't fail - they chug along happily - don't get hot and don't make me feel insecure about my data - EVER. I've had two of them for YEARS now without failure. The Mac drive is new, but the Mac is, too. I have learned to trust WD with my data and I've never been let down. I might suggest that people also buy a protective case for any external drive - it doesn't cost much - and it just gives you that extra level of feeling your data is protected - but that is just IMO.

Excellent, well worth the money!
I am running the beta of Mac OS High Sierra. This works perfectly with that OS. It is truly plug and play and seamlessly works with time machine. I backed up my Mac in about 15 minutes. Granted I don't have a ridiculous amount of files, but that's faster than any other hard drive I've tried. This drive looks durrable, but the design on the outside may be easily scratched. One other thing is if you're looking for an SSD hard drive, this isn't it. But it is an excellent standard hard drive!

It worked perfectly fine the first few weeks of use
Ugh I get so frustrated every time I work with this drive. It worked perfectly fine the first few weeks of use, but after a month or so, drive began to unmount itself from the computer and more frequently than ever now. It's so annoying!! Now, my computer won't even recognize the drive 90% of the time I plug in the port, which makes my back-up process impossible. The drive contains years of work and it's driving me nuts. Stay away from this product if you don't want to deal with a nasty headache,

Works Really Well, But Ugly
This is a very effective device to have if you have large photo or video files. For its size, it holds a huge chunk of data, and USB 3 is reasonably fast for transfers. I also like very much the security features that come with it – although the password dialog box often doesn't open automatically as it should, requiring you to get at password entry via WD Utilities. Only other thing...I know it's likely that the people who designed this drive think the exterior is really neat, but I don't. The earlier design with only 3TB capacity looked much more trustworthy with metal on the exterior, instead of the all plastic housing for this drive. But bottom line, this drive works well, in spite of it being ugly. I've had 19 different Western Digital compact drives for Mac over the past few years, and only one of them failed after very heavy use.

If you're looking for something easy & fast to use for your Mac, I highly recommend it!
I've been pushing off buying an external hard drive, mostly because the previous one I had failed me and it was somewhat of an annoying extra step to make it Mac-friendly. While I was doing some updates & taking my Mac to genius bar, I decided to finally make a purchase and I’m happy with my decision! I’m mainly using this to store my photos & videos that have been stored and taking so much space in my Macbook from years ago and it was really easy & fast to install and use. 1TB was enough storage for my use and the price was good for my convenience. The drive come with preloaded software for backups and encryption & 2-year warranty, so that was a plus (it’s always nice to have a warranty, even if it’s limited IMO).

4 years and still my go-to external hard drive
I am going to review this after some time of using the product but just like my previous WD My Passport, it is still proving to be an incredibly reliable hard drive that still has a good amount of space for my all my personal, college and work files. Still works perfectly on my MacBook and iMac, despite changing devices over the years. Highly recommend!

Simple set up. In no time at all I was backed up after almost a year without a back up due to lack of storage
This is so small, its like the size of a wristlet purse. I cancelled the set up help. I just plugged it in, and it set things up with my time capsule for me. I used to back up to my time machine, but they were all 2 TB and I have a 3 TB computer with a lot of pictures on it. Great purchase. Great price. I might get more. Get yourself backed up and organized and WD has made it simple while being super mac compatible.
