I would encourage you to learn the techniques of smudging, perhaps on-line or there are many books on the subject. Personally I find smudging to be very helpful and effective.

Q: How long does one smudge stick burn for? I'm wondering how many I would need to smudge my house?

I don't generally light the entire stick. For smudging purposes, I unwind the bundle and use individual branches or individual leaves, depending on how much work I am doing. One smudge stick will be more than enough to do a house the way I use it. Even if you light the entire smudge stick at once, it will still do a house. If this is your first time using sage, once you light it and it is burning, you blow out the flame, allowing the smudge stick to smolder. Do not keep the flame burning, as it is unnecessary and it will burn exceptionally quickly. Good luck.
