A new American Classic!
'The Thing about Jellyfish' is destined to become an American classic. I do not say this lightly. I picked it up intending to read a little here and there.. and before I knew it, I had finished the entire book in one session of reading. For me.. there are so many great lines that I would love to quote. I especially loved learning so much about these creatures. Yes, the book is about a young girl coping with the death of her childhood friend. One who was in the process of walking down a different path in life. Sadly, she was taken before a wrong could be righted. But, for me.. there were so many fascinating aspects of the book that will make it an American Classic. It goes far beyond adolescent puberty problems. It literally shows how as a species we are nothing more than a speck.. a mote. As a species we were so brave when we first endeavored to explore beyond our planet.. and now.. that we've reached the edge of our solar system.. we fear that we are nothing. Adults fear being insignificant.. as do tweens. Many may miss the two parallel comparisons. But, that's what makes it an American Classic. I suspect that this book will easily become required reading of all junior high students. They will learn much. But, I would encourage parents to read the book too.. so that they can also see the parallel between adult fears versus tweener fears. They really are not that much different.I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC from the publisher. When I started reading it.. I found that I had to read it all the way to the end.

Scientifically sound and psychologically profound
Any child who has suffered a loss will find value in this well written story. I especially enjoyed the initial session with the child psychologist. This writer knows her science and she knows kids!

come learn with me
Not only great information but presented through the perspective of a young, questioning, clearly caring young person. I will share with my 12 year old for sure.

Yes middle school was as awful as you remember
An engrossing and moving account of love, loss, and jelly fish in middle school. The parts about the jellyfish are fascinating. A great little book.
