Q: What is the difference between this and the 36540 level. Looks like the 36540 is magnetic. Any other difference that makes this one better?

Looking at the Stabila website, the only difference appears to be the magnets. The specified weight of both the 36540 and the 36548 is 2.8 lbs. and the photos look identical.Another person is suggesting that one is "tougher" than the other. This doesn't make a lot of sense. The Stabila website shows six models that look similar to this one...The "Heavy Duty Level Type 196", the "Heavy Duty Magnetic Level Type M96", the "TECH Digital Electronic Level Type 196-2", the "Magnetic TECH Digital Electronic Level Type M96-2", the "Mason's Level Type 196-2K", and the "'The Lights' Level Kit Type 196LED". There isn't a "light duty magnetic" version available and the only non-digital non-magnetic version of the level is specifically labeled as "heavy duty" and it weighs less than the "TECH" levels of the same length. Q: I pour concrete and they tend to get a little dirty. It says they're hose proof has anyone tried that out?

I do, but I just rinse it off with a brush and a buckets of water, I wouldn’t go trigger happy hosing a $350 level, the seal on the battery cover is kinda thin

Q: how easy is it to calibrate and how often is that required?

Easy to calibarate. 4 point calibaration. it is in the manual, or you can check instructional video in youtube. just once or as needed
