It says ages 8 to 98 on the box. I definitely suggest parental supervision. :)

do the pots need to be fired?

It's been many years sincere bought this for my daughter, but I don't r call them having to be fired. Very enjoyable for my daughter (now 15) at the time.

What is the measured revolutions per minute (rpm) for the wheel? I'm asking because i'd intend to use it for cake and pastry decorating.

It certainly doesn't have a tachometer so this is a best guess. The speed is a bit slower than I would have thought when ordering. I'd say it's about 60 RPMs, or 1 Revolution per second. Possibly a bit faster.

Does this wheel switch directions for left-handed users?

No, it only goes in one direction
