Magic!
My son has read this book over and over (and over and over) since getting it for Hanukkah. He absolutely loves it...whatever magic the author used to make it so appealing to kids is very much appreciated!!!

"CHESS FOR KIDS" a wonderful introduction for children.
A most readable, concise, and fun introduction to the teaching of young children to play chess. The book is designed or at least is suitable for young children and is a great way to get them aware of the chess boards and the pieces. For the average young child it creates the game of chess as fun and not some dull intellectual game for adults. If they use it properly they will be able to play a game (and win as the title states) that will give them the ability (and hopefully interest) to further their game and become a reasonable good or even brilliant player. Many might not continue but at least they will have had the experiences of having fun with a chess set and play with a bit of insight. An excellent start for any child who show a slight or more interest in that fascinating game of wooden board and men.I highly recommend it for you young child (and it might even prove useful and interesting to many parents!)

Just need straight forward information
No focus. Story telling.

my daughter has been reading this day and night!
Great Book!I discovered Richard James's great website 5 years or so ago.My 8 year old has been curled up with this at all times of the day forthe last two weeks. She almost prefers reading this over playing chess, but she has been using the metaphors given in this book alreadyduring her games. This is hugely helpful.I've too been saying things like "let's prepare a firing squad for theopposing King!."

Great for Kids
My son loves this book, and it has helped him improve his chess playing for his school club. Highly recommend this and some computer chess board (hand's on) for kids of all ages to learn the game!

Content is ok, but a lot of text, not engaging to my 8 year old. I would say this suitable for older, keen Primary or Secondary children.

Great tutor...good adult learners too.
Bought by an adult ..to enable me to take my game to the next level and really learn some strategies....Very good for me as the text is not too 'dry'..and things are explained very well, with great clarity...An excellent accompaniment to the online game.

Somewhat dissappointed
When I was about 8-years old I got a book called 'Chess for children' which was brilliant. I had hoped this would be similar since I lost my book and it now seems to be out of print. This book is functional but not as clear or friendly as the one I had.

Really confusing book. If you want a book to teach you the basics of chess, this is not it. There are more references to aliens and waterfights which makes it more confusing than informative.

not just for kids.
I am over 40 and a new chess player, 2 weeks to be exact and this little gem is really good at introducing new adult players to chess. It is written in a story format but i think most beginners will find a lot is covered. Obviously this is a beginners book and does not go too indepth, but this one, in my opinion will give you a basic grasp of the game and help you decide if chess is for you.
