Yes, 5 blades as far as I remember.

Q: I have not used a mat cutter before. How large of a mat can you cut with this system? Could you cut a mat for a 16x20 frame?

I haven't cut a mat that large (yet) but the mat cutter is 24" long so I don't see why you couldn't cut a mat for a 16x20 frame.

Q: Are the ruler measurements in mm (metric) or just inches (imperial)?

Yes , it is marked in mm(metric) as well as inches(imperial). "This practical combo mat and board cutting system includes a 24″ (61cm) straight edge..." If you look closely at the photo you can see the mm marks.

Q: does straight blade hook onto guiding system?

No. The straight blade is a separate tool that is in the box. However, both the straight blade tool and the bevel cutting tool use the same replacement blades. If I recall correctly you will get 5 or 6 replacement blades in the box. Think of the "straight blade" as an ultra sharp box cutter. BTW. I have made matted 8-10 largish photos since I purchased this matt cutter. It does a very adaquet job. However, I have thought from time to time that I would have done better buying the next step or larger Logan Graphic cutter.
