This is great
With large mat board so expensive, this exacting cutter is a godsend. Makes matting a joy, no anxiety 🤩

Foam Core cuts and mat board cutsare ragged
I hoping to be able to cut foam core backing sheets that are 1/4” thick. So far after practice, I still get ragged edges. I was hoping for a nice clean cut from this $1000 mat cutter. I have moved on to cutting 4ply mat board, changing the blades, still get ragged cuts. What is wrong with this cutter?

BEAST
Heavy duty, accurate, and large capacity! I've owned a lot of mat cutters over the years but this thing is a BEAST! They need to find a different delivery service, the one they used is really bad! Would have gotten five stars if the delivery was better.

Expensive, well made
As a photographer interested in the process of printing and framing my photos, I purchased some years ago the Logan 301-1 Mat Cutter. While it does an adequate job cutting boards, making the grooved opening for the picture was always a challenge. After watching the videos on Logan's web site I decided to buy the C855. I bought it elsewhere not on Amazon since it was less expensive. The machine is robustly built using CNC aluminum parts. Out of the box the machine came ready to use using the imperial measuring units. There are additional metric scales that can be taped on top so you can use the metric system instead. Placing the metric scale was a bit of a trial and error process. In the end I used some scrap material to do some test cuts. I then measured the cuts on the mat board with a ruler and marked on the aluminum parts the distances. After that I simply placed the metric scales accordingly.Doing the adjustments took some time, but after that the machine was very precise. To cut the grooves for the picture opening, I always use the left, top and bottom stops since it makes it very easy to get perfect cuts. In the online video Logan says to start the cut about 3/16" before the start of the vertical cut and end it 3/16" after the end of the cut. I simply subtract 4mm from the top and bottom borders, and set the top and bottom stops to the new border widths. One word of caution is that the C855 cutter is big! Make sure you have a big enough table to put it on. Alternatively you can go with the Logan C850 40 Inch Cutter, a slightly smaller version but using the same design and components. If there's one thing I'd like to see improved is the setting up of the scales since taping the metric scales can be a pain. Why not simply mark with a laser the scales at the time of manufacturing?
