Spyderco C187CFP Rubicon Folding Knife, Orange, 3.04-Inch

I bought this knife to replace a benchmade volli flipper that i unfortunately lost out in the back country of montana. As of now the rubicon is the nicest and definitely the priciest knife that i own. Hands down.. The very first thing that i noticed when i opened the INCLUDED ZIPPER POUCH, was how amazingly light the knife is. This is due to the carbon fiber handle with titanium skeleton frame. But just because it is light, that doesnt mean that it feels cheap or weak. This knife has great balance, super smooth ball bearing pivot, and what i personally feel is great traction that makes for a good solid grip that wont slip. The blade comes crazy sharp right out of the box, but could definitely be sharper. I can easily shave my arm hair with it thought.I intend to use this knife for EDC because of its size and weight. But that said, i have never been one to abuse my blades. It takes time to sharpen these things, and i like to be mindful of that. So you wont find me cutting through anything with a metal backing or against a rock or whatever. Not even with my cheapo kershaw blades. Its just wrong. Some might contest that this knife is too expensive for EDC, but i didnt just drop close to 3 bills for something i dont use. Its a tool. And a well made one at that. Take care of it and it will outlast you.The only real detractor i have personally found is that the knife blade curves and edges are very steep. This blade would not make a good slicer, if you like that kind of thing in a blade. I diced up an onion and tomato for the slicer test. It did the job, but the blade goes from skinny to fat to such a degree that it didnt do the job well. But that isnt my main objective for this knife. I have real kitchen knives for that. So i still give it 5 stars.

This knife is smaller than is looks, and rather light-weight because of its well-made and ergonomic carbon-fiber handle. This knife’s design with red accents is unthreatening, and “cute” (!) – When my wife saw it, she suggested it would make a good camping knife, though I think it is more of a man-toy and is too dainty to be really practical for any chores besides newspaper-cutting flaunts.The example I received in mail had quality issues: - its blade was off-center and slightly to the side for its entire length. And, even more disturbing was the “canning”, i.e. rippling of light along left-hand-side of upper false edge, indicative of imperfect grind that you encounter on a cheap $10 knives but not on $300 knives! These issues were cosmetic in nature and did not affect function one bit, but they were annoying nonetheless, making the knife seem undeserving of the asking price.Not that it was completely unexpected – I owned three Spydercos made in the same Taiwan shop and each of those had some minor flaws. This knife, however, is one of their upper-end models, and I was hoping for better, but again received what's usual. At the end I decided that I am too tired of having to excuse the quality issues I keep encountering with Spydercos, and decided that from now on, only the knives in perfect state of assembly and finish deserve my money. So I returned it.

If this knife was about a half an inch longer in both directions it would be perfect. I love the shape of the blade. The carbon scales are bitchin. it is super light. Too damn small. This got so so reviews when it came out, but I love it. It just needs to be bigger.If it was the size of the Mamba, it would be perfect.Edited 6/2/2017--I am downgrading this to two stars. Not particularly useful as a utility or tactical blade. I like how the blade looks, but it is not optimal for any application I can think of. I picked up a Harpy and a Police model at about the same time, and I'll take either over this any day. In short. It Is a very expensive carbon fiber handle with an oddly shaped, oddly sized blade.

I'll start out by saying that I am a big fan of Benchmade knives and based them as my standard when comparing knifes. I own about 3 or 4 Spyderco knives and in the past I was always unimpressed with the look and on occasion quality of the Spyderco knives. However, something about this Spyderco attracted me and after looking at it for a couple of weeks, I bite the bullet. Upon receipt of the knife I was very impressed with the quality, look and sharpness of the blade. This is a gorgeous and sharp knife, out of the box it will remove the hair from my arm. I had been carrying an Italian made Lion Steel SR-1 and put it on the shelf to carry the Rubicon as my EDC. I love the shape of the Rubicon blade and smoothness when flipping the blade.I am considering purchasing another in case I lose this one.

Very well finished knife for a production edition, nicely polished and very sharp. Very smooth and easy opening mechanism. Have used quite a lot, this is no safe queen, edge retention is excellent even when used on hard plastics. Knife has not marked yet even when carried in the pocket with keys and coins. The Spyderco Rubicon is also a rather light knife when compared to other knives its size as a result of the titanium and carbon fibre components.

I love the looks of this blade it is very nice looking. But the handle is too short and I don't even have large hands. The jimping on the spine is too large and slippery. It does not give me confidence. The flipper action is partially hindered and hits my fingertips sometimes if I am not very careful. I like something much more clean opening on a flipper. Like I said I love the looks of it but would never actually use it. Some people may keep it because they love looking at it but that's not enough for me. I want to be able to use and carry my knives at the same level of ability and confidence as other ones I have. I hope they tweak the design for a new version. I will definitely buy it. I'm disappointed I have to return it..I wish I could keep it.
