I'd say I'm an average woman and it's comfortable when light or heavy.

Q: Is the main buckle metal?

Yes it is. It slides and hooks into the fabric latches, at different levels. Mine has never popped open. I am very happy with this bag, for rides and I use it when I do food shopping. It is very comfortable to wear, even when extremely heavy. Hope this helps

Q: It says you can remove the laptop sleeve. How do you do it?

In my model, you can’t remove the laptop sleeve, it’s integral to the the backpack. Works well, it’s a great value backpack. Love it.

You can totally fit either a 13’’ or 16’’ .
