Splendid!
The book is really well researched and well written. The author translated from centuries old manuscripts to give us truly authentic recipes. The recipes are arranged in groups according to which Emperor's table they graced. This also makes it a interesting history lesson on how the Mughal cuisine evolved from its Central Asian beginnings to incorporate different influences (Persian, Middle Eastern and South Asian) over time. The numerous Mughal paintings make it a visually stunning book as well. The World cookbook Award it received was certainly well-deserved! I would highly recommend this to anybody interested in good food---and as a gift it would be superb.

Beautiful Art, Sound History, Tasty Food
A beautiful book for bibliophiles and gourmands alike. The recipes are amazing - especially how they are described within historical cultural contexts. Once you track down the ingredients preparing a meal is satisfying. This is a good book for cook book collectors and a good resource for chefs.

Delicious History
The Emperor's Table was recently given to me as a gift, and while I don't normally read "cookbooks" cover to cover- this is more of a very readble history book, with a cooking and art theme. The artwork is wholly mughal-period miniatures and set appropriately to each section of the book, which is divided betweent he 7 most proinent Mughal Emperors, and traces the evolution and intracacy of their cuisine, as well as fascinating anecdoes about their dining habits and general trivia about their reigns. It also has a good Family Tree to help us follow along. Also, very helpful, was the brief review of Culinary Techniwques and Utensils on pages 20 to 23.I would rate it FIVE (5) Stars, but there are a few issues: some editing work is needed as far as grammar goes and a Period-appropriate Map and Table of Contents in needed (though at the end there is an index of all the recipes). Also, a good Bibliograpy and specific citations would be a welcome addition. Hopefully the second edition, if ever, could be supplemented in this way.The recipes themselves sound delicious, but if there is one jarring issue about this book it is the disconnect between the "Foreward" and the following "Authir's Note." The foreward states: "The history and growth of cuisine is an intangible heritage that has been prone to loss over time." Yet, the Author's Note very clearly conflictingly indicates: "...the recipes have been modified to an extent to suit modern times... some of the spices not available then have been included to make dishes tastier. Use of dried fruits, saffron, and ghee has been reduced considerably." I would have like to see the original recipes, and then perhaps in a side note see what the author thinks makes them taste better to her, rather than erasing the historical actuallity of these cuisines. That being said, it is a wonderful read, and I hope the author will reveal a 2nd Edition with more supplemental information. I will be the first one to purchase it!

Book Review - By Dr.Afshan Hashmiof the book entitled :"The Emperors Table: The Art of Mughal Cuisine By Salma Husain (Author)"
The media could not be loaded. I love to read and write!!!Today Aug 11 2014 in my online book club I am doing review of the book entitled :"The Emperors Table: The Art of Mughal CuisineBy Salma Husain (Author)"Mughal dynasty has always fascinated me and I have read Mughal history thoroughly. This book is cookbook cum history book. The artwork is purely mughal-period miniatures and set beautifully and traces the evolution and intricacy of their cuisine. As the Mughal dynasty was great so was their cuisine and culture. The author did a wonderful job depicting Mughal cuisine and culture.I would give this book 4 stars. You Tube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kv7477yIeRQPodcast:http://drafshanhashmipodcat-1.podomatic.com/entry/2014-08-11T13_31_06-07_00Thanks a lot !!!!EnjoyDr. Afshan Hashmihttp://drafshanhashmi.com/

Long ago and far away...and very tasty!
"The Emperor's Table- The Art of Mughal Cuisine" is a wonderful book that combines exotic recipes, fabulous period paintings, and the historical notes on the evolution of the cuisine. The recipes are organized chronologically, grouped by 7 Emperors from Babur (1494 - 1530) through Bahadur Shah Zafar (1775- 1862). There is a short intro that explains how the cuisine developed, influenced by each ruler's likes and dislikes. You will be delighted by the recipes for each period! There are recipes for items such as "Slow cooking rice with Lamb and dried fruits", "Yoghurt soup laced with saffron", and "Duck glazed with pomegranate sauce." I found that the steps for each recipe were very clear and each ingredient played a key role in the dish. The end result was authentic Mughal dishes with complex flavors.Wonderful as the recipes are, I found I keep looking through the book to see the fabulous art work. Almost every recipe is accompanied by a full-page reproduction of a beautiful painting or "miniature", such as "A prince and his favorites enjoying wine and music" or "Aurangzeb and his elephant". You (and your taste buds) will be transported to a fairy tale world of "long ago and far away" in Rajasthan.
