Fantastic yet simple device
For $20 this is pretty amazing. Just plug it into your VCR and computer. Run the software and it will produce a 720P mpg file you can edit and enhance using the provided software or your own. Simple to use, great results. Easy way to save your old VCR tapes as digital files.

I was mistaken!
I offer legacy ingest. The majority of my customers who need digitization are obviously seniors. I can't afford down-time. My original Roxio unit broke when I accidentally kneed the head in my hub attached to my desk. Snapped right off. It worked flawlessly for me for 15 years, as did my Magix unit. I gave this product a try over El Gato's grossly overpriced alternative. It stopped working my third tape in. So I thought. I swapped three RCA cables and still nothing. I sent it back and got a replacement. Still didn't work. I never figured my VCR failed. It was the only culprit left so I picked up a new VCR and boom, I was up and running again. It was my VCR. I feel bad for sending the first unit in. So I decided to order another one. Now I have two grinding the mill 24 hours a day for 3 weeks without fail. An absolutely awesome product for an absolutely awesome price. These things aren't complicated and should remain simple with a low-price point. That's precisely what this device is. One thing though: if using Quicktime>File>New Movie Recording, you can't use a webcam. No ones fault really. But not a big deal. You can always use any number of capture software, including iMovie or Final Cut, Premiere, Resolve, etc. I don't. I just capture to file and upload to Youtube. Strongly recommend.

Reliable and works well
Used with OBS because I find that to work the best. It took a while but after some tinkering with the OBS settings and video properties, the product works really well and is reliable with capturing VHS video. A tip is to put the hue in OBS properties all the way up and increase saturation, that gave my video colors. However, there’s always a flickering blue/green band on the top of my recordings and I’m still not sure how to get rid of that. Other than the colored bands, it works really well and super easy to use. Worth the money, even though picture quality is not the greatest.

This doesn't work reliably or well.
Don't buy this. It works terrible. I installed it on my Dell laptop and it worked for the first two or three tapes. Then the audio became unusable due to some kind of noise suppression, popping and intermittent audio. So I installed it on my old laptop (also a Dell) and the preview video function would stop working after the first or second recording. It would still record but I couldn't see the video source. It had switched to my laptop camera. Then I tried loading it on my tower computer and it wouldn't work at all. When it was running it would not allow you to name or delete files from within the program. You can make adjustments to the video but not while it is in the record mode. If you accidentally choose "OSB Camera" as the video source, (I don't have one) it will lock the software at startup. That setting is retained even after uninstall. I found that when I uninstalled the software it left about 20 entries in the registry. I returned it after two days of frustration and only about an hour of actual recording. Further online research showed this is common problems for other users as well. I could never get the included OSB Studio software to work either.

Nice for the price.
A very simple solution to a knotty problem. I had to connect to my PC rather than my Mac--but the software bundle is excellent.v Video quality is quite good. Be advised that the software is on a CD and that you have to have a compatible drive to upload it.

Works perfectly and easily. But, as expected, some video quality is lost in the conversion.
I wanted to give this product 5 stars for the quality of the device itself and how easy it is to use. But the converted video is not great. I don't blame the device for this. From my extensive experience with shooting videos of school and community theater events, I know that converting analog video to digital is a technical challenge, and always "lossy," as we say. So we shouldn't expect too much from a $25 device. My standard of comparison for video quality is to play a VHS cassette from the VHS player directly into my 56" Sony flat screen TV. That's as good as it's every going to get. When I play the cassette from the VHS player through this UCEC capture device into my MSI Stealth GS77 laptop computer, the converted video usable and watchable, but not nearly as good as playing into the TV. And the results are exactly the same whether I capture it with the provided Honestech software, or the provided OBS Studio software, or VLC Media Player, or my Movavi Video Editor,So, I have to give the product only three stars, because the advertising implies that the conversion will lossless. If you just want to preserve the content of VHS videos, and some degradation is acceptable, this is a great product for the money. Once it's converted you can make as many copies as you want, and even copies of copies, without further degradation.
