It will take up to 10 in wide. I use the Marathon brand and it fit just fine.

are these tear-n-dry dispensers the ones that have a towel ready to tear off and when you do it puts another one out ?

yes it is. as soon as you tear off the one hanging out, another one feeds out. we have two of them, they are great!
