An Essential and Riveting Novella
Fans of the series already know who these three queens are but now is the story about who they were and the events that shaped them. As they are triplets Mirabella seems to be the oldest, the caretaker, the one groomed to be queen even at such a young age as her power is that incredible. Readers are already familiar with how powerful she is, but to see how early it manifested is incredible, as is her love for her sisters. She cares so deeply for her sisters and doesn’t want to hurt them, refuses to forget them, and to see that love hold strong over the years explains the events of the main series. It gives her more depth as a character. The same can be said for Katherine. Over the course of the series, the readers are inspired to feel pity for her, especially after the events of this novel. She was not a poisoner, never meant to be one, and with such a sweet and gentle demeanor, to see her subjected to the Poisoners only reinforces the pity readers feel for her. This is a girl who was never given the chance, her and Arsinoe. They girls were not meant to be real contenders for the throne of Fennbirn, only fodder for Mirabella. It’s a riveting short story that is probably very essential for the series because it explains so much about the girls as well as their surroundings. This novella also gives more insight into the caregivers of the girls, the depth of their relationships with the girls and how they chose to raise them, their lives and how those lives were impacted by having the girls in their lives. It really does offer a lot to the readers as far as back story goes and gives a little more insight into who these girls were and everything the soon became to define them.

Excellent prequel!
This is a GREAT prequel. The story fits seamlessly with the existing books, filling in the blanks in many spots where most readers probably wondered “what happened there?” and craved more details and more background.None of it is of vital importance to understand the plots of Three Dark Crowns and One Dark Throne, and these details would have very little significance to anyone not familiar with the books — in fact, they would likely find this book tedious — so I wouldn’t recommend anyone read it before, even if it is a prequel. But fans of the series will probably love these details that give more dimension to the main players in the books — if you’re a fan, definitely read this! And if you had mixed feelings because you felt you were missing pieces of the story, you might want to check it out as well.

But it was a pretty useful peak into their back stories.
I didn't know what to expect going into this --- I didn't read Three Dark Crowns before reading this so everything was a little confusing and took a bit of time to get use to. I mean I understood the gist of the plot from what I've see around the bookish community but remember which sister had which power was the more confusing part.Still, I had so many questions! The queen leaves the three young queen's after she births them and then what? Where do they go? Do they ever come back? Do the girls just live without knowing who their parents were? It seems so strange! This read like a book more than a novella to me; so much was covered in the short 93 pages. By the end of the book I had a better understand of what the 3 elements kept around are (and how horrible the poisoners are). I'm still confused at how they're suppose to kill each other or forget each other. But I guess that's what the first actual book is for.I can't say that this egged on my need to read the series though I am curious! I don't have a particular queen I was rooting for, though it's a bit hard when they're so young and still trying to figure things out themselves. But it was a pretty useful peak into their back stories.

NOVELLA FOR THE WIN!
I never read many novellas before, but this one is one you don't want to miss. There is so much context in this short little story and it makes you want more. It makes you crave going back to reread TDC and ODT. And honestly, could these covers be any more beautiful? If you're looking for a fun filler to tide you over until September, this is it. Please do yourself a favor. It doesn't take long to read and it's just wonderful.

Good read
This was a good prologue but I thought it would tell more about the sisters when they were together. It could have been longer for sure. It was still a good read, not as detailed as I would have liked, for example we could have had more information on queen mirabella's isolation. But I think you have to read this in order to understand all the books as they come together.

I liked this just because I love this series but I ...
I liked this just because I love this series but I was really hoping for a little more backstory. It was definitely a good read but didn’t give anything significant just added a little more detail to what we already know from the first two.

Excellent novella
I love Kendare Blake’s writing, and this short novella was a perfect addition to the series. It gives the reader a more complete idea of the traditions surrounding the queens. It also helps us understand the queens better as we learn about the way they are being raised and the temperament of each one.

Zusätzliches Lesefutter für alle "Der schwarze Thron" - Fans
"Three dark crowns are born in a glen. But only one will rule."

Wow
J’adore la façon dont écrit Kendare Blake. Aussi, j’ai beaucoup aimé lire le passage ou Jules trouve son familier Camden.
