Against the Flow: The inspiration of Daniel in an age of relativism Paperback – March 20, 2015

The book is about twice as thick as I was expecting. I haven't finished it yet, but I got it a few days ago and haven't been able to put it down. The author's insights into the world of Daniel are both interesting and applicable. I think he should make a different edit/version of this book that is about 1/3 or 1/2 the length and targeted toward high school seniors and university freshmen and not too intimidating for small groups. As it is, I think this book would intimidate most small group attendees, especially those in the age group this book seems very applicable to. It would be worth it, but I don't know how many would be willing to give it a go.This is my first John Lennox book. If I didn't find his content so fascinating I might give him an average rating based on writing style. He tends to meander, rabbit trail, and spend too much time referencing the New Atheists. I realize he debates them all the time, and many of his other books are in direct opposition to their books, but I kinda picked this one up over the others because I didn't really want that. However this book thrusts the reader into the middle of an ongoing debate.Regardless, I really do enjoy this book and have already recommended it to friends. I thought about giving it 4 stars and saving my five stars for a more heavily edited version, but I just couldn't do it. Sometimes I enjoy a little rabbit trail.

Before I read this book, I listened to John Lennox’s lectures on Daniel. The content was so relevant that I decided to purchase the book, although I was uncertain how much additional content I would receive apart from the lectures. I’ve just now finished this book, and WOW. I’m so glad I purchased it!John Lennox’s insight into Daniel has enriched and strengthened my faith and walk with Christ, and enabled me to see parallels between our secular world today and ancient Babylon.I can’t begin to say how critical some of the issues are that are raised in this book, and found the Appendix’s “critical thinking questions” to help me further digest and respond to people in the event they ask about the hope I have in Christ.If you’re remotely interested in understanding the spiritual heart and disciplines of Daniel, and want to learn more about how to stay steadfast in your walk despite an ever increasing secular world, this book is a MUST.God bless John Lennox for his heart and contemplation that he poured into this gem!

Lennox takes the reader on a journey throughout the book of Daniel and constantly makes reference to contemporary events in the ancient world. The author also makes a compelling case for the traditional date for the book. Highly recommended.

I absolutely loved this book. Not only did it really help me better grasp overall events of history and the Old Testament a LOT better, but Dr Lennox is also truly a joy to read. This isn't something you can read quickly, not if you want to absorb the brilliance of his writings anyway. Often I had to reflect and really think about what I had just read before moving on to the next paragraph, page, even sentence. This is so far my fav book by this author. The man is brilliant.

It is a good book with a lot of information related to historical proofs of Daniel’s revelation from God (coming from the author who is a scientist). I think he could apply more the concepts to the real World to live the points that he is trying to make I.e. how to defend the Gospel openly but not being rude.

Daniel is my favorite book of the Bible and I have studied it intently. I have taught it many times in several countries...through interpreters. I say this not to sound impressive, certainly I am nothing but a learner myself, but that you may understand my justification for saying that this examination of Daniel by John Lennox is fantastic. It is such a fresh perspective on the book and Dr Lennox does a fantastic job of drawing solid lines between our day and time and the life and times of the nations and people in the book of Daniel. Unbelievably relevant to our lives and reads like the headlines of todays news.

The practical understanding(s) gained by the study of the insightful writing of Dr. Lennox about the spiritual truths contained in the Book of Daniel from the Bible have real value in the daily application of God’s Word...living in a world filled w people searching for genuinely helpful perspectives of understanding...Dr. Lennox has a lifetime of valuable experience that he shares for the help of anyone looking for a way to see through the confusions of ideas that won’t, that do not help to settle issues of ever increasing importance. I recommend this book without reservation. Help us at hand if you will let Dr. Lennox share with you what he knows, from experience, to be true. Get it.

John Lennox' commentary on Daniel is just like himself, jolly and substantial. Don't miss it. It is a world view commentary, which is precisely the heart of Daniel's book. I've read lots of commentaries on Daniel, but none like this. There is a lot of psychological insight into the characters, literary niceties pointed out, and background material that is helpful, along with an occasional poem from Shelley, all the while managing to be a deeply spiritual work. A delightful pleasure to read.
