Hello there, You may soak in a solution of bleach and hot water. Rinse thoroughly with distilled water. Dry and further sterilize in a clean, hot oven. Q: Would these bottles be ok to use as a mouthwash bottle? Just to hold the liquid when i need it?

They would work fine but they are about as tall as a wine bottle.

Q: Are you sure the wire closure is zinc plated steel ?

Looks like they are but one can not really tell unless the metal is tested at a lab. The metal has not corroded or reacted with the slightly acidic contents (kefir) held within.

Q: Is the opening 1 1/4 inch? Hard to tell from the picture.

Yes. The stopper is 1 inch and the bottle opening is 1 1/4 inches. I used a tape measure to make sure. I didn't want to be inaccurate.
