Best English translation of Rumi's Masnavi
After some research on English translations of the Masnavi, I went with Alan Williams' translation, and I'm so happy with this one. Williams' maintains the beauty and sound and thankfully doesn't try to create rhyming couplets ... unfortunately, I previously read another translation (Oxford) that attempted to rhyme the verses and the result was a difficult-to-read text that lacked the musicality of Rumi's poetry. I also found the introduction and endnotes to be terrific, providing just the right amount of context to help you understand certain verses. Overall, I'm looking forward to purchasing the remainder of Williams' translations of the other books of the Masnavi.
