Where do I begin? This is one of, if not the best metal albums of all time. The album features extremely technical playing, perfectly mixed guitars and drums, and the bass is haunting. Many have said Epitaph is influenced by jazz, this couldn't be further from the truth. This album is modern Mozart, through and through. The ending riff to the song Only Ash Remains is based upon Dance of the Knights by the glorious Prokofiev. Some close minded people have said that the album is a "wankfest", or basically just showing off guitar skills. This is also false, the drums and bass are fantastic and actually stand out on some of the tracks such as Seven and Diminished to b. In 100 years humans as a society will worship this album as the greatest piece of music ever invented, as the link from the Classical to the Modern, as the natural evolution of classical music. Bottom line, this is the greatest death metal album of all time and one of the best pieces of music ever composed,

There will be nobody left to write an epitaph for the human race . Do you really think we can trust Jeff Bezos to do it from space? I think he expects us to all become Necrophagists in the wake of climate disaster, meanwhile he rewrites human history to feature himself as a messiah. I bet he broadcasts the Bezos Bible throughout the galaxy. Just so you know Jeffry bb, the extraterrestrials are already laughing at you. Your betrayal of your own race will win you no favors in Space .

There is metal that is harder and darker than Necrophagist. However, doing something artistically correct and thoughtfully can express an idea in a truer way than something that only has flippancy to its credit. Necrophagist is progressive death metal at its best. It's like listening to classical music if it was composed and performed by midnight cemetery-going ghouls. Extreme, yet reserved and thoughtful. Masterful and dark, it rocks, captivating the listener in its dark spell.

At first, it may seem like Necrophagist (whose second album, "Epitaph," was released in2004) are just like any other technical death metal band. Yes, they do share some similarities to bands like Cryptopsy and Suffocation because they all have amazingly tight and technical musicianship (that's guaranteed to make your head spin), blistering guitar leads, crushing double bass work, and impeccable blast beats.But Necrophagist still manage to be different than nearly every death metal band out there nowadays. How, you ask? Well, for starters, Necrophagist are German, which is not something very many bands can claim. And secondly, and more importantly, Necrophagist incorporate numerous progressive elements into their crushing aural assault. In fact, "Epitaph" is about as progressive as death metal gets (imagine a mix of Suffocation, Dream Theater, Yngwie Malmsteen, Sadus, and Children Of Bodom.) The record overflows with prominent bass lines, riffs that are simultaneously heavy, fast, crunchy, and melodic, spots of prog-ish noodling, and breathtaking guitar solos that are some of the most brilliant, infectious, intricate and best that this reviewer has ever heard. Unlike some death metal bands (see Morbid Angel, whose atonal solos are just a bunch of random notes played as fast as possible), Necrophagist's are ultra-slow, melodic, controlled, technical, and crystalline. And boy, do they wail, too!Most of these songs are similar and follow almost the same structure, so there's no real "best song" on here, but every song on here is a definite keeper. "Stabwound" bursts the starting gate open with thrashy guitar leads and bouncy drums that race in tandem, and is topped off with slapped bass notes, and a pristine, multi-parted, jaw-droppingly gorgeous solo. "The Stillborn One" boasts several good tempo shifts, machine gun riffs, a prog-ish, noodling bass line, walloping blast beats, and a handful of Megadethian solos that soar as high as a skyscraper. Next, track three, "Ignominious and Pale," is highlighted by busy, crunching, smoke-inducing riffs, and another lengthy round of sweet, soaring, classical solos, and track four, "Diminished to B," is highlighted by a catchy chug and churn lead, a propulsive bass line, deft, thumping drums, and an almost thunderous rhythm. Some of the other best tracks include the title track, which boasts fiery guitar licks, busy, pounding blast beats, several brief, keyboard-sounding solos, and two long, glorious, wonderfully wailing solos, and "Only Ash Remains," which begins with a bass solo.If anything hinders "Epitaph" at all, its that it's a little too perfect (its musicianship, which is clearly a product of studio perfection, can sound almost robotic at times.) Necrophagist might have benefitted from including a few mistakes here and there, but all death metal fans will gladly gobble this album up. The guitar solos are worth the price of admission alone -- after all, fifteen bucks is pretty cheap for pure gold!

This is an amazing album. As a musician it is very inspirational to listen to the wonderful instrumentations. The only low point for me is the vocalist, he is very unimaginative and monotonous, even for brutal death metal. Without him, I wouldn't even consider Epitaph to be a death metal album. The guitar tones aren't super heavy, rather they are very pleasing to the ear and also very precise. Mohammed is a brilliant guitarist and has written some really juicy songs here. If you are a guitarist, a fan of melodic tech metal, or even just of complex music, then you owe it to yourself to check this album out. If you can get past the vocals, it will absolutely blow you away.

As a owner of a Studio and former Bassist for Bedlam, I hear a lot of Metal and love listing to metal. When a friend of mine first introduced me to Necrophagist, I was immediately blown away by the significant power of Guitar rhythm, Bass, and the drums. All and All, these guys and true pros at Doom/Death metal. I know I know, Its really hard to categorize this CD in the genera but were else do they belong. Any who, track 7 is one of the best tracks on the album. These guys are amazing and I recommend this to any and all metal heads. GREAT BUY!!
