These brushes work well for the purpose of cleaning shoes. The smaller brush has very stiff bristles and isn't great for applying polish but is good for cleaning out small spaces. I didn't loose too many bristles on my first use either which is good.Only complaint is that they smell like a dead animal so I definitely believe they are real hair. It's not such an odor that you notice when working with them, but while holding one up to inspect it I caught a slight smell and upon giving it a sniff was quite grossed out. Wouldn't recommend storing these in a sock drawer or anywhere near clothes because of that. Not sure if this is due to improper treatment of the hair, but I don't think many household items are meant to smell like dead things so that's why a star was taken off.

Bought a brand new pair of leather boots and a can of mink oil. I bought the brush set and it looked really nice. The brush did good until all the "hair" started falling out. Tried the second brush and the same thing happened. It's very soft "hair." Whatever "horse" they got it from had really good conditioner.

I was looking to replace a shoe brush getting a little worn. These are a lot smaller than it appears. They work fine and the quality seems good. Just a little small.

In purchasing two applicators, I use one for black shoes and the other for shades of brown. The horse hair bristles have not shed and these work well. I have used the tiny applicator to apply mink oil to leather soles, which extends their life prior to goodyear/blake resole. I have used castile soap and water to clean the brushes....all good!

This is a good set to get if you already have the larger horsehair brush which most people tend to get first.

If you polish your shoes with just a rag, you really don’t know what you’re missing! This brings out so much shine and luster. It helped bring my Mary Jane Danskos that have a nice heel back to life! They look as good as the day I bought them.
