The set came about a week prior to the expected delivery date which, of course, is always a good thing. The pieces are double boxed with colors situated in separate bags and then each individual piece is in it's own bag with the major pieces wrapped in styrofoam.This set checked all of the boxes I was searching for, which include:- Classic wooden look but still somewhat unique(the Knight is unique and incredible)- Weight - This may have been the most important aspect for me and what I was worried about the most with not being able to handle the pieces prior to purchasing. I cannot stress this enough - They do not disappoint! The size and weight of these pieces create an incredible feel in the hand and they create that phenomenal knock you hear when the wooden piece hits the wooden board through the felt.I recommend a board with a minimum of 2" squares but personally feel 2.25" squares will best show off the beauty of these pieces and not feel cumbersome on the board. I'm designing a board and the pictures show a board that will have 2.25" squares.I used the reviews to finally decide on this set and hopefully this will help someone else. If you're looking for a great classic, wooden, phenomenally weighted set with an atomic sprinkle of uniqueness in the form of the Knight, this is the set for you.After a lot of research, I'm ecstatic that I made the decision to buy. This really is a great set. I'm pleased with the purchase and it's definitely a good value. Overall these pieces match the pictures very well, just be aware that these are made by hand and there can be slight deviations in color and details between sets.Pros:* Shipping was much faster than I expected* Pieces were packed very securely* These pieces are HUGE. Many of the reviews mention how pictures don't do them justice, and I feel I now understand why. They are very satisfying to hold* Very detailed. The knights are beautiful and the bishops have satisfying notchesNot really cons, but just some things to be aware of* This dark pieces are rosewood, which has a natural reddish tone to it. It's pretty subtle in the pictures, but in certain lighting conditions the pieces are more of a deep maroon than dark brown* The light pieces are a bit more tan than they appear in the pictures, although again this depends on lighting conditions* These differences could just be due to different wood lots, so your set may look different from mine however

In a manner of speaking I got in on the ground floor on this one. Searching the Amazon for chess sets a few days after Christmas I came across this handcrafted hardwood set. It was more than I wanted to invest in a set of chess pieces but the 50 plus sterling reviews convinced me after a couple of scotch rocks.I received them a few days ago and still can't get over my good fortune. A friend of mine commented after seeing them - 'yeah they are real nice but I don't wanna pay that much for a set of chess pieces. When I told him the price - he nearly fell over. I see the price has gone up considerably since my order was placed. However, if I needed a second set I would still consider the increase a fair price.I just wanted to add to the good review I have already written. I ordered these chess pieces at Xmas last year. Since then everywhere I have taken them other players always ask me about them. There are always shocked to here the price I paid. I know this company has gotten more than a few orders just from the circle of people I play with. I know 5 other people who have ordered these sets and couldn't be happier with them.You know what I like most about this set is the Knights. In most other wooden chess sets the Knights aren't done very well. It's a shame because the Knight is really the only piece that the designer can get creative with. That's one of real strong points that makes this set so attractive- IT HAS GREAT LOOKING KNIGHTS.

Very pleased... to those of you on the fence. Dont buy plastic. Spend a little more and you'll have a nice wooden set you can pass on. Having a nice looking Knight was important to me when choosing this set. Sometimes they look creepy or look emaciated . You will not be disappointed.

It's a great set. Super impressed with the craftsmanship. I'm very pleased with the quality of this set. I couldn't be happier. The weight the look The feel are all top notch. if you like classic wooden pieces with style and quality than this is the set for you. And they arrived a week early.

Very nice set. Great detail and quality in every way. Absolutely worth every penny. I will say the castle was NOT stamped "house of chess " which was something I wanted. But over all great value and real nice.

Spent more than I would have liked, but this is an outstandingly beautiful set. The pieces are perfect for play and have a nice heft to them. Twenty years ago I bought a wood set for tournament play. This recent purchase is even more beautiful.

So close to perfect. Fantastic weight, craftsmanship, feel, and color. Only thing is that one of my horses has such lopsided eyes that it looks silly.
