Safety Innovations Child Proof Deluxe Door Top Lock for 1 3/8 inch Thick Interior Doors, (1-Pack)

EDIT: almost 3 months later and he's broken 3 of these. I've ordered the same lock but made of metal (I believe steel) from a different seller because the concept is genius and works- as long as it's made of a strong material.I have a 3 year old who somehow exactly on his 3rd birthday figured out how to climb out of his crib. Life was amazing until then. Back when I had one kid per room, my 3 bedroom house accommodated my two children at the time easily with a solid evenflo baby gate so child proof it was boarderline adult proof at the door way during the dreaded "big kid bed" transition. This is a safety issue, nobody wants their child roaming the house at all hours or worse, leaving the house somehow in the night. Except this time, he's my third child and shares a room with his older brother so the gate thing wasn't as convenient as it was 10 years ago. Enter this contraption. Hallelujah!!! My older son can operate it easily and my younger son can't even begin to reach it yet it's still operable on both sides of the door. This way, baby stays safe all night in his room and big brother can quietly slip out and back in when he's got to use the bathroom during the night without banging a metal baby gate around. My only worry is that this is plastic.... My son has pulled as hard as possible and it gives but doesn't break... I am worried it will snap eventually which is why I may order one as an emergency stand by. I wish it were of steel construction- I would gladly pay double or even triple for it. I'm just not and never have been comfortable actually "locking" my children in their rooms (what if there is a fire? Etc) and this is a nice alternative to a tall baby gate at the doorway.

Basically, all other door knob covers on the market are for amateur toddlers/babies that sit quietly in their rooms and actually listen to their folks. For the rest of us raising little MacGyvers who thrive on defying direct commands of their caregivers/parents and enjoy breaking child safety gear like stealing candy from a baby this may be a true God send! We've literally tried all of the other kind of knob covers on the market with no avail. My little 2 yo MacGyver given just enough time and fortitude could out manuver them all in no time and would soon be found in the kitchen, bathroom, or backyard trying to make a break for it. When we are talking basic child safety such as preventing a child from straying the safety of the household sometimes you have to take different measures. This top door lock is not only easy to install taking approximately five to ten minutes depending on your handy man prowess but it is actually quite effective! It is easy to use that my older son is able to use it with no problems. My toddler son is also a door kicker too and this lock has withstood his barrage of assault with no problem! I'm quite satisfied with this purchase and highly recommend it to parents with clever, perceptive Harry Houdinis. You will finally be able to breathe a sigh of relief and know that your dear child hasn't escaped the confines of their room and isn't in the process of hot wiring your car! Rest easy weary parents rest easy!

Installing was extremely easy. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because it does feel very flimsy and that it could break easy. So if you have kids or pets that like to push on door it will probably break. I think you’re definitely getting what you pay for.

After our three year old son decided to pour his sister's nail polish on his feet as well as the carpet and the dresser, we decided we need to get a lock on the door. This would not be an easy task -- door knob covers and other such devices only slow him down for a second or so.I saw this product and really couldn't tell from the picture how itworked. But it's a different style, and I liked the idea it's on top of the door (where he can't reach). When it was delivered, I saw how simple it is - a long screw to put on the top of the door frame, a tall "post" made from hard plastic to screw into, and a slider (made from the same hard plastic) to slide on top of the door. It works by putting screwing the post in, closing the door, and then sliding the slider so it's notch is in the post. Then the door only opens by a few inches. Simple yet very clever.Installation took less than five minutes, and it works like charm. The only one not pleased with this is my 3 year old!I would make sure that you put the screw around four inches from the knob side of the door (just like the directions say). If it's too close to the hinges, the gap would be great and a child could probably get that post out.If I would make one enhancement, it would be to put the notch on both sides of the slider instead of just one side. Because now we have to slide it towards the outside of the door and it gets too close to the end. If the notch was on the other side as well, we could slide it towards the hinges.Regardless, this is a great product and would highly recommend it.

I will say the product was easy to install, took about 2 min. The durability, HORRIBLE.I bought this to keep my 3 year old out of my 12 year olds room. The first day, my 35 pound toddler pushed to door and completely cracked it and it is now useless. Don’t waste your money like I did.
