The Magic Of Reading Brought To Life
Reading really is magic. The words and illustrations of a really good book transport us to other worlds, other time periods, other dimensions. And a really excellent teacher will get children excited about reading and make them yearn for the written word. MISS SMITH'S INCREDIBLE STORYBOOK, by Michael Garland, is one of those very magical stories that really appeal to children and make them want to read more.In MISS SMITH'S INCREDIBLE STORYBOOK, Miss Smith is the new teacher, and she makes both reading and school cool. She has bright orange, punked out hair, wears red Converse high tops, and a black leather jacket with buttons of cool rock bands on the collar. And when she reads to the class from her storybook, the stories come to life...literally. Zack and the rest of his classmates suddenly find themselves on the deck of a pirate ship or in the woods with Little Red Ridinghood. At the end of each story, the characters and the locations pop back into the book. Zack and his friends are very excited about class and about reading. One day, however, Miss Smith is late for class, and Principal Rittenrotten (gotta love that name!) begins to read from Miss Smith's book. Suddenly, the storybook characters are out of control! Can Miss Smith get them all back safely in the book?MISS SMITH'S INCREDIBLE STORYBOOK is pure delight. I bough it as a Christmas present for my 3 and ½ year old on the recommendation of a friend, and my wee one just loves it (I do, too!). The story is simple and clearly told. She follows it without out any problems and just loves looking at the vibrant, colorful drawings. She easily identifies the characters from other familiar stories, and finds the entire dilemma in the book to be hilarious.MISS SMITH'S INCREDIBLE STORYBOOK is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for preschoolers through about 3rd/4th grade. The pre-readers will love listening to this enchanting story, and the young readers will love reading it for themselves. It is a book that will last through multiple phases in a reader's life, and that makes it even more magical.

Amazing tool for Visualizing
I use this book every year as a read aloud in my classroom during our unit on visualizing. I read it to them first without showing them any of the illustrations and encourage them to create their own pictures or movie in their heads. Then I read the story a 2nd time showing them the illustrations. My 3rd graders absolutely love the story, so we even go back a 3rd time and do a picture walk because the illustrations are amazing. It also is a great way to review certain fairy tales that sadly kids are not always exposed to as young children.

Maybe this book justifies boredom?
I didn’t care for this book. First (and I am aware this is a strange preference), I don’t like the word “boring.” I don’t think it is evil or anything. :-) I just don’t like the concept of boredom being paraded in front of my children. Life is interesting, and I want them to look for the interesting things in it. In this book the kid is totally bored with school until he gets a teacher with a magical storybook where the characters come to life. I think the point was probably not to suggest boredom to the kids full of life but to introduce the magic of good stories to the kids prone to be bored. That is a good message. But as my kids are not prone to be bored at this point in time, I felt like it came off more that life is boring unless you are given magical entertainment, and that is not a message that I really want to have in our library.

Cute and short.
Cute and short. I bought this because it was on the school's summer reading list. However, the words were harder than I expected and my son, who is just going into first grade had more trouble reading it himself than I would have expected. He loved the story! I would still recommend buying this book to read together for younger kids.

This book is great. The teacher reads from her giant storybook and the characters come out of the book and the students get to see the story unfold! One day she is late and the principal comes to read and chaos ensues as he doesn't finish a story so all the characters from many stories end up out of the book and she has to read all the stories to get them back in! I buy this for a gift and all the sequels whenever possible. As a teacher, we use this book for, characters, descriptive language, fantasy, personification and so much more!

I found this book at the book store just the other day. I read it to my daughter's 1st grade class this afternoon. Only one or two of the 16 children had seen/heard of it before. They loved it. They were straining to see the wonderful bright colored pictures more closely before we passed it around. They enjoyed picking out familiar characters in the illustrations. They appreciated the humor of Principal Rittenrotten's predicament. They all agreed that it would be neat if characters really came out of books. The length/number of words is just right for this age to hear or read themselves.

This fit perfect with the lesson I was teaching and the idea got over to the children I read it to, so I had to read it to the adults also, they wanted to see the pictures and hear the story. Everyone loved it.

A bit disappointed.
The book itself was in great condition. I had heard a lot about the story and was expecting it to be better than it was.
