The OPD in Jail
I use the Oxford Picture Dictionary at least twice a week with the inmates at a county jail in Illinois. My students are adult males from 18 to 56. Some have never been to school and are illiterate in their native language as well as in English. Because my students come and go at the will of the courts I use various year one textbooks. The one consistency in my materials is the OPD. No matter what the lesson of the day, there is something in the OPD that can reinforce the lesson and give opportunity to use the language. I am a great believer in the value of interactivity in the classroom, and the OPD offers many opportunities for valuable small group, partner, and around-the-circle verbal exercises. Even when I have not specified using the OPD, I find my students leafing through it or, better yet, using the Index, to find out what I am talking about. My students love the OPD, and so do I.

Spanish learners still enjoy most of book's value
I am learning Spanish. I had read that this book was primarily intended for Spanish speakers learning English, but I didn't understand what that really meant. I had taken a quick look at a classmate's copy of the book and it seemed great to me, so I bought one too.The heart of this book is a set of vocabulary in both English and Spanish on each page, illustrated by pictures. This feature is equally useful for people learning Spanish or English. Then at the bottom or side of each page there are points for further practice, questions for discussion, and the like. There are also occasional stories followed by questions on comprehension. These are all in English, and are really useful only for Spanish speakers learning English.I'm a lot more interested in the vocabulary than the exercises anyway. The exercises may be useful in a classroom setting, and I'm sure they do add some value for English learners. But my personal finger-in-the-wind estimate is that I can still enjoy about 75-80% of the functionality of the book.I'm sure this book will help me learn a ton of new Spanish vocabulary in a relatively easy and painless way. I'd say I'm going to get more than my 15 dollars' worth out of this book.

excellent teaching or self-learning tool
I had the English-only version of this book, but when I realized how useful it was for my English adult class I ordered the English/Spanish for me to relearn Spanish. Also all of my students are Spanish speakers, so instead of making copies in English only, I started making them in the E/S version. It saved me the effort of trying to translate. Besides all that I love the thematic approach of the book. The possibilities of working on each of its pages are unlimited for classroom activities. It is really a classroom life-saver if the teacher is creative and knows how to plan activities around each page. For example I used 2 verb pages for practicing pres. continuous, then pr. simple, and other verb tenses, making questions etc. I used the same copies for practicing what students do in the course of a day, and much more.Anna, presently in Texas

Excellent. All the details of life (how to say bath mat, to make change) grouped by practical subject, well illustrated. It's beginner-intermediate; I wish there were an advanced one - more process oriented than discrete events: how to renew a passport, make a will, buy an airline ticket, open a bank account. I wish there were an advanced one because this one is so good.

Great for Beginning ESL courses
This dictionary is more like an introductory textbook for those beginning to learn English (or Spanish). The vivid pictures help reinforce the meaning of each word rather than the direct translation. Each word and picture also provide great prompts for conversations and finer grammar points.Este diccionario es mejor un libro de texto para los que empiezan a aprender el inglés (o el español). Las imágenes vivas reafirman el significado tras cada palabra en vez de la traducción literal. Las palabras y sus imágenes también provocan conversaciones e introducciones a los conceptos finos de la gramática.
