Are these just as fast as the ssd you plug into the back of the series x?

No. Physical "disc" drives are inherently slower that solid-state drives (SSD). There are compatibility issues when using it with Series X: Games that take advantage of (or require) Series X... will NOT run off of this HDD. Games that run on Xbox One (S/X) will be fine... just not games for Series X (and probably Series S... I don't know, I would NEVER buy the S versions of Xbox consoles)!
