How do I know it’s a brand new MacBook if it says it’s sold by amazon ?

Based on the specs, this is the 2017 model. The 2018 and 2019 models have Intel UHD Graphics 617, not Intel Intel HD Graphics 6000. Also, the advertised model doesn't have the Retina display. So, yeah, "new in box", but also "had a long and full shelf life". Google "macbook air versions". The first result that comes up should be the official Apple document that helps you distinguish the versions. I can't link it here, because Amazon likely won't allow that.

Now that it is November, 2019, lots of the previous answers are dated and irrelevant. So, what warranty does this computer come with now?

I just received my Mac air December 30, 2019. I read previous entries about accessing Apple website and checking the warranty using the serial number. When I entered the serial number I got a message back that there was no warranty date assigned. I updated the date to the purchase date from Amazon and it accepted it. I now have the standard 1 year warranty starting with the date I entered.

Is this a good laptop to write a book on ?

Any laptop or desktop computer can be a good one to write a book on...depending on how comfortable it is for you to use. Do you want to take your writing on the road, to coffee shops or libraries? You'll want a laptop. Would you be more productive at your own desk at home, where you can arrange for good ergonomics for your long writing sessions? Stick to a desktop machine. The most important question, though, is what keyboard feels right to you? Find a store where you can try out the keyboard of whatever computer you're most interested in. Don't assume that what someone else likes, you'll like, too.

Great Laptop but seller should be more upfront in the FAQs.

I love the MacBook Air 2018 but I'm taking a couple of points off because because there are some scratches on the laptop and its not a full year warranty. Amazon/3rd party sellers aren't authorised by Apple. Hence starts the warranty from the date of purchase by them. I have about 200 plus days of warranty left.

WORST MACBOOK AIR I EVER HAD, I THINK ITS A REJECTED PIECE FROM STATES

Worst Apple product I ever had, doubting the genuineness of this product. The cable was US spec. Just in less than 2 months stopped working, shows only white screen with some lines and loud rotation noice. Causing me lots of trouble in this lockdown period. I think its a refurbished or second quality product REJECTED FROM US.

Nothing to say other than very quick service and well packaged. Everything worked out of the box. Comes with a USA?? mains adapter, but luckily I had an apple converter to make this into a UK type plug so that it can connect to the UAE electricity.
