Better than the thin nose vise grip method.
Needle nose grips worked well for me ,but that can distort the retainer. So far I'm preferring this brake spring tool. Will see how this holds up?

Decent quality and price
Have purchased and used a few different Performance Tool products. Purchased this brake tool as 2nd choice if other brake tool didn't work. Tried it on 2nd side of parking brake replacement and worked well on 2011 subaru forester x.
