Moving on from single letter sounds
This is an A4 paper workbook which develops early phonics skills. There are two activities per page and these are progressive, the aim being that you work through the book gradually over terms 2-3 (although my 4 year old will do pages and pages at a time if I let her). The book assumes good knowledge of the single letter sounds and works on the 2 and 3 letter sounds. It starts with the simple double letter sounds (ff etc), then simple digraphs (eg ch), looks at a few high frequency and tricky words (at, it, the, he, she etc) then looks at some harder digraphs (eg oa) and then some trigraphs (eg ear) before finishing with some more high frequency and tricky words.Activities are varied and include circling, colouring, dot to dots, drawing, mazes, word searches, a dice game and a little bit of writing. The book does a good job of introducing some formal learning into fun activities and the simple line drawings give plenty of opportunity to do some colouring in even where the task doesn't require it.There is also a set of notes at the back to guide parents on the phonics sounds and with suggestions on other activities you can do to follow up the book learning. This early years workbook is aimed at 4-5 year olds in reception year and is well levelled at that age group. It would work really well for home schooling also.

Get ahead of the class
My son is currently 4-years-old and in Reception. He absolutely loves school. I got him this book which is aimed at his age group so that he could continue school at home.Inside are a number of activities to keep him busy, albeit he needs an adult to read the written instructions, and a dice for one of the pages too. Tasks include colouring, drawing, writing and so on, all on topics related to phonics (starting with the "ff" sound and going through various other sounds to more tricky words at the end). All the pages are black and white (with a bit of blue too) so that pages can be written all over and there is also the possibility for more colouring to be done to the rest too as an extra activity for this book once worked through. There aren't any reward stickers for completion of pages like other similar books sometimes have. Stickers act as a nice motivation tool, but my son got on with the most of tasks in hand anyway without these, although stickers would have been good to help persuade him to do the things he skipped (e.g. the second word search he didn't do because he didn't enjoy doing the first so much). All the stuff in here is at his age group with some of it having been covered already in his school, e.g. "ee", and some of it not covered yet, e.g. "ure", although I expect the school to cover it later in the school year. Also the book has plenty of variety too so it didn't make him bored. The book is cheap and my son liked it. These books are ideal for him.

Useful practice if given at the right time
A great well designed phonics book. The level seems to be second half of Primary 1 here in Scotland (our first school year), and most kids will be 5 as a minimum. I think if you have a kid doing multiple letter phonics before 5, they are doing quite well. My youngest showed no interest in this until he had reached a similar level at School, at which point he picked it up again and completed most of it. On the other hand, my eldest son was reading single letter sounds well before School age and could probably have completed it at 4. It's a useful practice book, however your child will need to be familiar with the alphabet single letter sounds before starting, and I think parents need to take care to give this to a child at the right moment.
