Are these actually 8.5"? I ordered before and received smaller plates.

They are 8.5" in diameter. Note that these are small plates. Not big enough for dinner. A six inch sub sandwich will completely fill the plate.

Is an oven mitt needed for removal from a microwave?

not for us, but we use it mostly to reheat

are these plates lead free

It is my understanding that everything made by Corning is lead free as of 2005. It is almost impossible to determine what year older corning ware/Corelle was manufactured. I had to throw all mine away and replace them
