This was my first pair of high end IEM's. I've had a plethora of earbuds, some didn't really seem too bad. I bought a Samsung Galaxy phone a few years ago and was really surprised at how good the packaged earbuds sounded. I have a pair of Shure 215's which I think sound pretty good. I also have a pair of Apple earbuds, the ones that have a single balanced armature. They sound infinitely better than the packaged earbuds you get with an iPhone. But then I treated myself to a pair of UE 900s's and welcomed myself into the world of really good audio. Crystal clear highs, very distinct and rich mids and clear, strong lows like you've never heard. I'm not currently a musician but I have a background in music so I know what I should be hearing and with the UE 900s's, you're not only hearing it you're appreciating and enjoying it as well. They work well with ordinary iPhones and mp3 players to do these IEM's justice you really should be listening to a high definition audio source. Some of the newer cell phones are hi def audio capable, meaning they can play audio files that are better than CD quality. Sony makes a line of high resolution audio players that are great. 96 Hz/24 bit files sound unimaginable through UE 900s's. The soundstage is big, separation profound. You can actually hear one instrument playing on one side of the stage and another on the other side of the stage. If one were to say they're the next best thing to hearing it live, I'm not so sure it's not actually better than live...A pair of UE 900s's will set you back $400. But if you love music and like to hear it the way it really sounds, you'll think it was the best $400 you ever spent.
