54" for the tallest 34" for the shortest.

Q: How high (in inches) is the stand when fully extended from bottom to top?

Measured from where your music would rest, just under 3' 6", top of stand is 4' 5". We extended it as far a possible, and yet keep it stable. There is no stop on it. So, you can pull the whole thing out of the base.

Q: I've got one but hate the heavy all-metal desk. Is it interchangeable with a more lightweight plasstic or aluminum top?

Strong. Sturdy. Versatile. Functional.

Delighted and surprised. It is better than I expected. It is adjustable to every imaginable needed configuration. The adjustment knobs are substantial and in logical positions. The materials of which it is made are good quality and of a substantial gauge. BUT, - a warning. I give it 5-stars across the board except 3-stars for "Easy to use". Please be careful when adjusting it. The material is heavy and if you don't support it carefully when adjusting it or, as I did, you accidentally turn the wrong adjustment knob, it can slip, fold or slide onto your wrist or somewhere with painful or damaging impact. It is heavy.
