What size hole should be drilled for the anchor?

As pointed out by others, the screws really are less than ideal: the heads shear off easily and the length and thread pattern is not ideal for wood (like say, a cedar post). Their one and only positive feature is that they appear to be stainless, meaning there is less likely to be a “battery” effect with corrosion from dissimilar metals. Actually there is another plus: the heads are small and go down the barrel despite poor milling of the barrel threads. So, what’s the solution and what about drill bit size? There are 2 applications: 1) Masonry If you’re placing these on a brick wall, then the MASONRY bit (with ideally a hammer drill) is the smallest bit that will allow one to tap in the plastic anchor and give a snug fit. 2) Cedar This is a challenge, because the included screws are not ideal as discussed above. My solution was to buy #9x3-1/8” GRK construction screws from Amazon and then laboriously use a Dremel to smooth the screw heads and remove the burrs from the barrel. These screws are self drilling/self tapping, but drilling a tiny starter hole of say 3/32” will make your life easier. One word of caution: these are very aggressive screws and will pull the fixture right into the wood; so go easy on the torque. If I had to do it again, I might use a SS washer to lessen this and also, prevent leaning of the fixture. The bad: dissimilar metals and probable corrosion.
