Q: Would this resist winter weather?

So far it has for me. I am in the south and do not see brutal winters. Although, we have had a really cold season. For me it is great that it has survived our 100 degree summers. Hope this helps.

Q: What is the best way to use this? Replenish with 6 gallons of water when the soil is dry?

I am using mine mainly for the height. I filled the bottom with rocks and then mixed sand with the foam peanuts, then put in the amount of potting soil I needed, so I just water like I would any other potted plant.....when it's dry about an inch down. I guess it depends on what you're planting, but I would not add 6 gallons of water. You could always take a picture of the planter and ask someone at a local nursery their opinion. I have pansies in mine right now and they are doing great. Good luck!

Q: Is there a drainage hole in the bottom?

There is a spot to drill a drainage hole in the bottom.
