A Curate's egg
This is the first novel by this author that I have read. What I liked:Interesting story, a police procedural into a cold-case murder and a kitchen sink drama about the effects of being in a family at the heart of the case. The police investigation parts were well written and the dialogue snappy and believable and it moved the narrative forward. The plot didn't take the obvious ending it so easily could have. What I didn't like:The main characters, they were so perfect, with such a perfect life. I realise this was intentional to make what followed all the more shocking, but it was so over the top. I almost gave up after two chapters of this. The characters - I just didn't care about them, landed upper-middle class types who basically did what they liked in their community. The "family" parts, far too much waffle about the same things over and over again, and the dialogue of these characters was terrible, do people really talk like this? The last 4 chapters are unnecessary and could have been cut to a single concluding chapter. In conclusionThis reads like it has sold the TV rights already and a six part "ITV Drama Premiere" will soon be with us. If it ever makes it to the screen it will be OK for the first episode, getting interesting in the second, then episodes 3 and 4 will be pointless padding, episode 5 will be better, then in the final episode it will all conclude slightly too quickly and conveniently. If you enjoy reading about privileged slightly insecure neurotic middle class types then this is for you.

Slow start but draws you in
I wasn’t sure about this book when I started it, but it sucked you in and had some interesting twists and turns, however some of the characters were a little weak and even annoying. The cold case murder was good and it covered the police challenges in these circumstances, also potential biases. I did like that it mentioned the pandemic although it was at the very beginning of it and it hadn’t affected the UK when it was written it just refers to the problems in Europe (Italy).Parts of the book were a bit repetitive and I found Julia annoying especially when saying shall I cocktail us up and they weren’t even having cocktails it was wine, so wine o’clock would be more appropriate!I do agree with other reviewers that it does feel like it was written more as a TV script.

Surprise ending
All through the book, I kept wondering who the murderer was, and what a surprise to finally find out. I enjoyed the book and want to read more of Susan Lewis’ novels.

Amazing
Well written, moving book. It kept me in suspense from the beginning to the end. I really enjoyed the forensic aspect of the investigation. I'm always attracted to these kinds of mysteries.

A gripping read !
I really enjoyed this book. The plot was detailed but easy to follow. The characters were detailed in a way I felt like I really knew them.Kudos to Ms. Lewis!
