Quicken Starter Edition 2017 Personal Finance & Budgeting Software

Write up fails to point out that this is only for first time users. If you try to install when you already have a Quicken previous version, it will not use the existing files, it says as you try to install it. So all your previous Quicken entries will not be shown if you continue the install. I want to return it to Amazon, but there is no "Return" option on my Order page. I had to buy the Deluxe version. This Starter was a waste of money.

The 2017 version has replaced my 2014 version. Your basic checkbook template on your computer. Connects with your bank if you want, and has all kinds of security measures built in. I have used the Starter Edition for about 10 years now. Microsoft quit making "Money" or it got too expensive or whatever ... so I changed to quicken and am happy I did. Makes on line communication with your bank quite easy. You can download your statement right to Quicken. Fills in all the blanks for you. Your checkbook always balances with the banks. It does NOT, however, solve your banking issues. Sometimes ya just gotta call your bank and have a talk about whatever. Great software. Updates on a regular basis so it keeps up-to-date as banking changes. Print checks on your printer (after calibrating the program to your printer and vice versa ~ also easy enough to do). VERY fairly priced comparatively speaking from other on line companies including Intuit. Follow the on screen prompts and you'll be up in no time.

I don't appreciate how all companies any more want to collect your data and use it. I'm not sure what version of Quicken started it, but this version now sends data back to quicken for storage on their web site.With hackers gaining as much information as they can, the government cannot protect their data, and Yahoo is finding that hackers compromised their systems 3 years back, it's impossible for companies to protect data.... so why do I want them to have it. I want my data on a USB stick where I only put it in the computer when I need it, and then save it offline. This version of quicken REQUIRES internet, and it requires data storage (communications) to quicken where they have full access to all my data, meaning so do other people with malicious intent.

This is for first time users only. Current users are forced to upgrade for another &37.50 after download. I would haved preferred this basic version for my use.

I didn't want to spend extra for the more robust versions because I only use it for the register function and reports. Doesn't load files from earlier versions, so I had to call Quicken (perennially the worst tech service ever) to do a work around. Had to create a new account, which left my 20 years worth of data dead in the water. Don't bother with this. Spring for the deluxe version, which is what I ultimately did. You can still download data directly from your bank even if Quicken stops supporting your version after three years. I can rarely get their one-step update to work anyway. I was foolish to fall for their scam to make you upgrade every three years. Should have stuck with my 2014 version. HOWEVER, if you are just starting to use Quicken, this version is OK. I will NOT be upgrading to the 2018 or later versions, because they have gone to a subscription format, so you never end up owning the software. Every version of Quicken that I have had has bugs, and I have used it since before Windows. There isn't much competition, so they can get away with subpar software. So you can tell I'm not a fan.

I was a Quicken Deluxe user and wanted to upgrade to a 2017 version so that Quicken would continue to support the ability to update my account balances. Since the description says that Starter edition supports online balance updates, I thought this was the optimal choice for me, since I didn't need the additional services that Deluxe edition provided. However, I was very surprised and disappointed that the product description does NOT say: 1) This product is for new Quicken users only; 2) This product will NOT work when upgrading from Quicken Deluxe. In other words, Quicken Starter edition will NOT import your data from a previous version of Quicken Deluxe. If the description said this, I would never have purchased it and would have purchased Quicken Deluxe 2017 instead. (Hence, am returning this and doing just that.)

This was a disappointing purchase for me. I've been telling my sister about this program for years and finally bought her this to try for herself. I still use the 2007 version and have had it on 4 different computers over the last ten years. Apparently all that has changed now. This version is only good for one computer according to my sister and refuses to let her install it without first connecting to the internet for registration. Maybe Quicken should just come right out and tell customers they are only allowed to rent their software and charge an annual fee.

Simply put...don't buy this product. I had issues installing it requiring the assistance of a tech person. Then it uninstalled and I had problems re-installing. Once I got that debacle cleared up, the fun began. Unlike my old version of Quicken (2007), now you need to register. They want your email address. Your PHONE NUMBER. And a ridiculous password you will never remember. They want your name. Your address (they will get fake ones). They want to know where you bought Quicken and what other money management software you've used before. Never again. Should have stuck with the older version.
