Q: Does the food retain water when it is washed?

Yes. I would not recommend putting them in the dishwasher (although, I have not tried this). To clean, I fill the sink with hot soapy water and use a wash cloth to clean, rinse & air dry.

Q: Are they cheap soft plastic that's going to get smashed?

No, they are not made of cheap plastic. They will not get smashed. My granddaughter received her sets last Christmas and they are in the same condition as the day she first started playing with them.

Q: Do 5 year olds like to play pretend with food and dishes? I'm wondering if my nephew is too old for this.

I have 7 grandkids that play with the play dishes & this fake food. Ages: two 2 yr olds, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 they play restaurant and house cooking and serving with it. I want to get some more but with different foods

Good quality play food

Melissa and Doug products are my go to place for quality toys. This play food surpasses any other that I’ve come across. It’s more detailed than most others out there and the color( other than the meats) is more realistic. The kids love it and are not as picky about the meat color 😊 it’s well made ,washable in warm sudsy water,and should last for generations.
