Q: Does the pump motor make an annoying humming sound or does the h20 cover it it?

Being in Australia I had to change the pump. Using the same size pump there was no humming sound at all. Hope this helps. Kerrie

Q: Has anyone actually put live plants in it, like water lilies and water lettuce? Does the water smell with live plants in it after while?

Water lettuce is extremely tolerant of splashing water and multiplies rapidly (never put it in any open natural water or it will be invasive especially in warmer still water!) you can use barley and other natural products for ponds and it uses up bacteria (smells) other natural products for this and the more water is covered by lettuce —you’ll only need one to start because they’ll multiply you could add one water lily too but the water quality improves as it’s more shaded by plants as they grow so no worries! Sunlight produces algae…don’t worry but only buy natural products because birds and other animas will drink From it-:) they need clean toxic free water—nice job! You’ll love how quickly it beautifies for you enjoy

Q: Is the pump small enough to put in a shallow bowl?

This would depend on the depth of the bowl. Guesstimate you would need a minimum depth of at least 8-9 inches; pump is about 2.5 inches high and then you have to allow at least 6 inches for the pump tubing.

Q: what maintenance is necessary?

I have had this bamboo Low-Profile Water Fountain for a couple of years. The fountain mechanism does not really require any maintenance. The water in the container requires chemicals -- chlorine and water clarifier -- from time to time to keep the water from becoming cloudy and green with algae. A couple of times a year, I dump out the water out of the container; rinse the container; and put in fresh water and chemicals. That's it . . . very low maintenance.
