Is the inner molding removable?

No. It is not made to be removable as it is sewn into the case. However if you choose to rip out the seams then it could probably be removed. I'm not ripping mine up to find out.

Can you put the iron in case before it cools?

No. The interior lining does not appear to be heatproof.

i have the SF-717 iron and it fits perfectly. Not sure about the SF727
