Q: Are these ok for a 2 yr old?

There were no sharp edges but at two years old children put almost everything in their mouth. Who knows if the paint is safe. One would assume it should be lead free. My kid is actually using it outside in the dirt helping to garden with us. Hope that helps you.

Yes. Little small for 5 year old.

I purchased to give away as a gift.

Q: what age is appropriate for

I bought it for my 3 year old, but I had to take out most of the tools before they are fairly heavy and sharp. I'd say it's more appropriate for ages 5 and up.
