MTD Products INC 24A-45M4700 Gas Chipper/Shredder, RED

I bought this as a replacement for a 5hp model my father purchased in the 1980s. When he downsized 10 years ago my son and inherited it and used it until it died this year. The new one works just as well if not better than the older one. Please realize: this chipper has a high compression engine that some may find hard to start, but once it starts it works very well. I've used it for limbs, branches and brush, feeding the thicker pieces through the metal chute for limbs and the smaller stuff through the large plastic chute. It also does a great job on leaves and I am accumulating a good pile of wood and leaf mulch for use in the garden beds. I hope my son and grandsons get many more years of use out of it after I have downsized in about fifteen years.

It tends to get bogged down if too many leaves, etc are fed at once. It does not chop dry limbs, they must be green.

Like everybody else, this machine does as it supposes to do. After 3 years of usage, I decided to replace the blades. Big mistake. It is not designed for a DIY person like I thought I am. I disassembled all the attachments, brought it to several machine shops. They are either won't do it or charge $500.00+ for laboring and parts. For this kind of price, I can buy a new one instead. PLUS, changing oil is another pain. I figure it out that I need to disassemble some attachments so I can tip it over to drain the oil out.Now, I just shred the leaves mostly, avoid thicker wood branched to conserve the blades life, so I can keep the machine a little longer. For the price, I paid for this machine is not worth at all.

I bought this after returning another chipper shredder because it was hard to feed and clogged easily. This one is designed very similar to a Craftsman that I had for over thirty years. The feed is easy but I tilt the machine forward using 4x4's to make it easier to see what your doing. It will clog if you have too much wet and stringy debris but will handle normal dry stuff without any trouble. You will see the air swirling in the hopper when bag is full or there is a clog. The strap on the bag doesn't slide easily and the lock is hard to release so I will probably replace the strap with a rope. Otherwise I am satisfied with this machine as I have used it on my own yard and also at my community garden.

worked great on green limbs 6-8 year old dutch elm no worky so goodly------ old hard wood too hard like cutting iron fire and dynomite next !!!

I have used it for several hours and it works great. I would recommend to any homeowner.
