Excellent Mechanical Plug with More Surface Area
This mechanical plug is inexpensive but effective. Unlike some of the other mechanical plugs, this one has a larger surface area to contact the sides of the pipe. In my situation, the three inch pipe was corroded and worn down. The ones sold in the local stores did not have enough rubber to make a solid seal against the pipe. This mechanical plug did. In addition, the Jones Stephens Corporation T31003 Economy 3-Inch Test Plug has a smaller bottom plate that easily slides into the pipe. The only drawback with this item is the wingnut. Replace the cheap wingnut with a better quality wingnut. Also, do not bother buying the other mechanical plugs sold at the local stores. This is the one you want.

It works
We used this to replace an old rotted out sewer cleanout plug. The old plug was all rotted and barely covering the sewer cleanout hole. The plug was slightly smaller than the hole but as you turn the screw to tighten the plug against the sewer hole, it'll inflate the black plastic balloon piece. Eventually the black plastic balloon will inflate enough to seal up the sewer hole. This was better than trying to find an exact sized plug because our sewer hole was so rotted a replacement wouldn't seal the hole properly anymore. Recommend if you need to replace your cleanout plug and can't find one that'll fit perfectly.

Worked great to seal up my drain pipe.

Poorly designed and a very flimsy twist-nut.
This unit is not well designed, in two critical ways: 1) The twist nut on the top is crappy metal. The one I have broke after applying minimal force with pliers. 2) This is supposed to work for a ~3" opening. However the metal disc at the top is not even 3" in diameter, meaning that the whole unit can actually *fall in* to a 3" pipe opening. The metal disc should be somewhat larger to prevent this.

nice plugs
These are great plugs with a really nice rubber seal. They're much cheaper than ones I can find locally. These seal better than the smooth rubber type of plug, especially if you have imperfections in the pipe. Can't beat the free shipping.

Broke during first use

Good plug.
At first I thought this plug was oversized, but it just fit snugly and tightened nicly. Works well to replace rusting caps.

Disappointed!
I was very disappointed with this plug. In fact, the wing nut broke the first time I used it and returned it.
